French defense: Exchange variation - attack with Black pieces!

French Defence: Exchange variation, for Black, and those who want to fight for a win in this mainly drawish, boring line. If you want to learn how to play agressive chess in the Exchange French, look no more! Here you'll find the best tips and guidelines, ideas and plans for Black, ideal for you trying to get something out of typically dead opening line.
The line itself can be played in a various ways, and White is not exclusively going for a draw. In this video we are dealing exclusively with those lines of white that are seeking to kill the game in order to squeeze a draw. That being said, I am NOT discussing the more ambitious ways White can play - 4. c4, for example.
Along with other negative attributes associated with the variation, it is also a crime against chess principles: on the third move (3. exd5) White is helping Black to get more active pieces, while at the same time they are ruining own chance of gaining space advantage and better center control.
Content of the video is also a game played by Michael Tal and Victor Korchnoi, Voroshilovgrad 1955. Mikhail Tal said that it was the only time in his life he played for a draw!
Video is consisted of the following chapters:
0:00 Intro to the Exchange French
0:58 Create the imbalances
2:00 Light-square bishop
2:22 How to develop the queen?
3:00 Game example: Tal vs Korchnoi
5:02 Attacking formation for Black
5:27 Castling long or short?
5:40 When to castle queenside?
10:22 Conclusion / Outro

Great video, love how you lay out what to do in a clear structure i.e. when white does x we can do x to create an imbalance, and the examples. Thanks

Amazing analysis. I am a French defense player and constantly face the boring exchange variation.

Nice instructive video. I like the humor 🤣I'm really considering learning the French as my new main weapon against 1.e4. Some game that really changed my view on the French exchange variation is Kovacs - Korchnoi 1969. It might even been you who showed me this game in the past.

It wasn't me 🙂 but the game is excellent, a tactical gem. But I wouldn't take it as the one game example to show how to deal with the Exchange French since the early Qf3 line is not something commonly done by white. Normally we see the Bd3, c3, Nf3, Nbd2 setup. Thanks for the great comment, Nico, as always!

Nice production on this one and really funny opening. I always try to avoid taking a dump on the chess board whenever possible😂.

Yeah, I am trying to make some changes, to make it more interesting for the youngsters to keep watching. It turned out this video most of the people stop watching at 0:30, which is a place where the defecation is mentioned. I hit everything wrong. 🥹

Thanks for this. I hate the Exchange variation - always have troubles deciding on how to position my Knights; and so far putting them on f6 and d7 doesn't seem doing too much.

Very intructive video. Won lot of games using those ideas. I am still looking for some lines after 1.e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3.ed ed 4.c4...

you can take on c4 and then play Bd6 Nc6 Nf6 - this line transposes to the QGA, it's very reliable

Nice video! Got some new ideas for my next games :) . Although I was wondering what about when white trades white squared bishop on f5 and black replies N*f5? I ve seen in a couple videos and courses that it is a common theme on a French exchange and that the knight in f5 gets quite strong but everytime I go through that road I end up not knowing what to do with the horsey and having all pieces clumsy :/

Just watch it again and I see you mentioned it :D Pity (for me) that it wasnt that position wasnt more developed. Maybe a new video only on that haha. Great video anyway!

@@BadBishopChess That’s why I love that quote. You use the metaphor of sh*tting, while keeping the language clean. The Exchange French is Capon Excrement. (Wait till you find out what a Capon is!)

Thank you, Robert! Despite everything shown here, it is still hard to fight for a win when your opponent is trying only to simplify and squeeze a draw.
