Shalom.Shmuele! I guess that they are from the western peninsula called "la Bretagne" in France . . . It's a tradition that the fiddler's there start their songs in such a tempi. Mostly covered by bagpipe blowers who, also a lil bit in contrary to the fiddlers, start very slowly but quickly get quicker, very quick in fact and after a while they meet the tempi of the fiddler and from then on the musique bretonne sounds quite nice. It's only at the beginning that the slow bagpipes and the hurrying fiddler's hurt the ears of the French, mostly after the tempi have met each other, people like the harmony even more and clap the rhythms with hands and feet... It's a lil bit like serving the main meal very spicy and heavily drowned in Harissa and for the dessert you serve corne de gazelles and ronds de miels and baklava and so forth, see that the more the main meal was hot, the more the guests taste the very sweet dessert. The bretons do use the same principle in their music it seems: They start with a horrible mix of bagpipe blowers and speedfiddlers to at the end serve a young lady playing her harp so smoothly that people are tempted to cry out "marry me!" ... That's just a way to bait people like fish, only the bait is more subtle and non-musicians don't have a clue about these traditions. OK, at one exception: Some centuries before our time the bretons used these horrible bagpipes to horrify the French kings army cuz before the Brits invaded France for over 100 years, the French kings often had, let's call it undiplomatic encounters, with their vasalls from Bretagne.. As for the French nobles the slowly teasing nerves bagpipes sucked on their nerves and those of their horses too, the bretons had it easier to defend themselves and their Celtic duché, but nowadays of course the musicians from Bretagne just want the French goys to pick up their strange taste to finally let them fall in love with the girl at the harp. It's s somehow known on the side of the Bretagne and not in the rest of France, due to that lack of knowledge about their own minorities the French finally fall for the girls of the minority and once made them their sons in law these french will never again do any harm to the Bretagne due to the addictive potential of marriage... This trick works so well that nearly no one in France nowadays is aware that the bretons originally came to their peninsula as invaders from Cornwall. But as later on the francs tried to get their land back, there has been like a series of medieval wars between the ducks de Bretagne and the Rous de France. The francs should have been the stronger ones with the bigger cavalry, but the Bretons used the pretty daughter of a duc de Bretagne to bait the Dsuphin de France and once he was married to her, literally the morning after he was already totally addicted and granted to his daddy in law, the Duc de Bretagne privilèges that those other duchés did not get, like the Duc d'Aquitaine for example. Overthemore many girls from Bretagne got green eyes like Ornella Muti and that alone is a very well working bait. Overthemore once they got the Frenchman on their hook, of course he'll rarely spend his vacations on the south coast any more cuz his addiction drives him quite automatically to the northwestern shores and thus every summer the hostel industry and the restaurants in the Bretagne are so cracked full of Frenchmen that the bretons make money, much money, lots of money ... ;-)
