Thanks for posting this video, one of the most inspiring videos I've seen. Love to see it from the front ... looking up at that big front tipped forward ... the flat windows reminiscent of the windows on the control cabins on ships ... a powerful, mysterious and somewhat frightening appearance.

I had a 1976 freightliner similar to this but mine had a twin turbo 8V92

Nice to see a re-power using a Detroit, instead of vise-versa.

Detroit had the 6-71, the 6v-71 8v-71. Also you could get same blocks with N-55,60,65 injectors. most all parts were interchangeable as well.

Daniel Kennedy.... there were (are) 13 different injectors available for the 71 Series... and that is NOT including the DDEC (electronically controlled) injectors, or Marine or Industrial injectors.... they all had different flow rates, depending on application and power levels desired for end use.

I used to drive one back in the early 80's and it was a dream to drive so much power but about 3 to 4 miles to the gallon ooooh ok then but not now LOL

OTR drivers make $4/hour. LOL You must love trucks to pay them to drive the thing. Fast food workers are pushing for $15/hour. Rookie truckers should make $75,000/year experienced about $150,000/year. European truck drivers have been getting paid by the hour for 50 years. Band together and shut down for 4 weeks drivers you will get paid. Until then eat the crumbs off the floor.

I think in the late 60s GMC advertised the 12-71 at a rated 430hp, with N-65 injectors.

Is it difficult to squeeze a v12 detroit under a cabover?

  • @ThePaulv12

Why? Think of it like this: The Vee configuration engine has a great advantage, and this is compactness. An 8 cylinder engine is not 8 cylinders long, but only about 4 cylinders long. Likewise a V12 engine is not 12 cylinders long, but only about 6 cylinders long. Most modern truck engines today are inline 6 cylinder, so an older (but still excellent) GM V12 in a cabover is hardly going to be an issue space wise. Other issues (exhaust emissions mostly) spelt the end of widespread use of the 2 stroke GM.

Makes sense. From charts I've researched in the past the 12v engines didn't seem that long in comparison to those currently being used. I just wondered why seeing v12 under cabover trucks was so rare. Is there any way to beat the emission issues with an exhaust system or something?

seamonsterdinosaur They tried that with electronics. The system was good but the main issue then was the 2 stoke cycle itself. That couldn't be overcome so instead GM went with the series 60 Detroits which were conventional 4 stroke Turbo. One must always remember the 2 strokes make the sound they do because they have double the power strokes a 4 cycle engine has - for example a 2 stroke doing 2000RPM is like a 4 stroke doing 4000RPM. This somewhat illustrates the issue with 2 strokes and their high emissions and poorer fuel economy. Also the 2 strokes were not the type of engine that could be lugged. They need to be revved to make power. Below 1800RPM GM 2 strokes had little torque and had to be driven in a way that kept the motor revving at all times when under load whereas most modern Diesel inline 6's pull from about 900-950RPM with approximately a 1000RPM power band. With such a broad spread of power from lower revs the 4 strokes are at an advantage from an emission standpoint. Also the 4 strokes are probably easier to drive. Detroit 2 strokes don't have such a wide powerband topping out at about 2450RPM. The thing is though, the reliability of those 2 strokes comes into play. They were very reliable and long lived engines provided they were never overheated and the correct single grade oil was used. This reliability offset a lot of the supposed high fuel consumption issues of 2 strokes. Under load 2 strokes and 4 strokes use about the same amount of fuel, but the saving in consumption come when the 4 stroke Diesel is off boost. Since the Uniflow 2 stroke requires a blower to run, then the parasitic pumping loss of the blower must be paid for in fuel at all times. The other fact is the blower provided NO boost. Interestingly, many 2 stroke GMs were turboed (and aftercooled) but still required the blower to cover the idle to 1800 phase of the rev range. In trains, the GM EMD turbo 2 strokes which are V6, 8, 12, 16 or 20 and 567, 645 or 710 cubic inch displacement (CID) per cylinder (and about 950RPM max) had a crank driven turbo with an overrun clutch when the exhaust would take over as the revs got higher. I believe (and I may well be wrong) that some later GM Detroit Silver turbo 2 strokes had a means of 'coasting' the blower in a similar way the GM EMD division did with their hybrid turbos. Fascinating stuff isn't it!?
