Rotary Switch Info.
Be reminded that slow speed point motors rely on a constant current feed to hold the blades in position once the spring are removed from the points. At its simplest, each motor (motor 1 on the outer switch blades and motor 2 on the inner switch blades as per the diagram) could be controlled by separate polarity change-over switches if the operator is prepared to tolerate that the outer blades may trap the inner blades until the operator controls motor 1 to release the trap.
An improvement is to inhibit the feed to motor 2 when the blades are trapped by using a change-over-switch built into motor 1. However, this does not solve the case when setting route 3 where both blades simultaneously need to be set to the left as simultaneous operation can never be achieved elegantly with two separate switches.
Hence in diagram the independent switches are replaced by a 4 pole, 3 way rotary switch wired so that position 1 selects route 1, position 2 selects route 2, and position 3 selects route 3. If (say) motor 2 is physically reversed to better fit under the baseboard, remember feeds M1 and M2 need to be reversed.

I have made an appointment with Charlie, at the Davis Hall, for his upcoming seminar on "How to wallpaper a hallway through the letter box". I had invited Charlie, on an all expenses paid visit to my home, to demonstrate the technique. Unfortunately for me, and fortunate for Charlie, he declined my generous offer due to prior commitments; not least of which was his ongoing task of producing more eminent and informative videos for us all to learn from.

Gday charlie , video 198 helped me with the lighting on the refueling shed i purchased from an english hobby shop which when comparing the english pound to our australian dollar can be quite expensive but a lot of british infrastructure can translate to our railway hobby. I also bought the lights from west hill wagon works and they are a great product but my ham fisted approach in handling these resulted in a few broken attempts but as you say we live and learn. I just want to say thanks for the very informative videos you put out charlie i look forward to every one of them and they are a source of inspiration. Cheers from Graeme

What I liked most was your surprise that everything went so well 🤣😂Then of course you set things straight by parking the Hymek on the blades stopping the points switching and the universe was back in balance! 😉 I see what you mean about the wallpapering through a letter box analogy, but at least you can access that circuit board easily and the slide in fastener is a great solution 👍 The facia boards will top the job off nicely and I like the simplicity of the design, and I hope you saw the irony in that the design you had does actually resemble a letterbox! 🤓 Didn’t see you at Brum sadly but hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. It was a long day out from East Essex but well worth it all the same. Cheers Charlie 👍🍻🍀

The safety aspects are really important when dealing with materials used in modeling. I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer, not related to any materials or the like, but I will say use a mask when you do any cutting and the like. You don't want to take the risk. Cancer treatment is not a pleasant thing to go through. On a more positive note, it's lovely to see how this section has come along and to see it all up and running. The whole layout is really coming together well

Good progress on the Layout, my son and I are keenly following the build. We were at the NEC on Sunday, but sadly didn't spot you, but my son Daniel (4), spotted the helix demostration, and said "That's like Charlie's One", I was taken a back at first and wasn't sure what he meant, then I realised he was referring to yours. We had a lovely day at the NEC, Daniel particularly enjoyed the RC Lorries. Keep up the good work.

Another top educational and informative video Charlie. I completely understand the wiring spaghetti as things grow from a previous life a decade or so ago as a hi-fi and AV buff where things got added and taken away, ultimately a rewire of the whole caboodle needs doing but I've still yet to work on a modular concept so all this helps. Anyway that's off topic. Many thanks for sharing another great video.

Charlie, great progress on the freight yard. I really like the idea of the hinged facia board, it makes access so much easier, but I feel for you with the limited space under the track, that is tight. The next series on the Brach station, and surrounds should be very interesting, and I am looking forward to watching progress, and what new tricks and tips you will share. I am not sure what it is about getting older, but Supper, or dinner, just after 5pm appears to be a thing, I get really cranky if dinner is late, when I was younger, any time was fine. Thanks for another great video. I too have a helix and an Accurascale class 37 and a derailment issue. To solve that (as often works - by walking away and thinking about it as I am sure you do too) what I did was to put 1mm of cant across the width of the helix. What I did was to monitor the 37 as it climbed and then found the offending area. The design of my helix is slightly different to your's as the distance between each level is maintained by a fixed length spacer. I therefore just put a 1mm packer beneath each outer leg and voila - problem solved. I guess you could just undo the location nuts and raise the top and bottom nut by 1mm and retighten in the offending area (you might then have to do that round the outside of all the levels and I appreciatedthat might by a pain with threaded bar. Anyway, just sharing a thought in case it helps.

Another great video Charlie. It's been interesting and very helpful over the last few weeks with laying those slips and three ways. Track laying over the board joins seems novel to me as all the layouts I've come across have the rails cut with the board join. So you've got me thinking as the layout I'm starting will be as permanent as yours, so maybe I won't complicate it with track cut at baseboard joints. Cheers, Phil B

I'm probably too stuck on the old skewer sticks that I see people use in other videos. Maybe more of an American thing? @@ChadwickModelRailway I Just Finished My New Train Yard In My Layout yesterday

  • @edmoxon5756

Following your Accurascale Class 37 video, after I finished putting together my DCC Train Automation helix, I carefully ran the 37 up and down to see if it derailed. It looks like I may have avoided your issue, as it doesn't derail - but thanks to you, I was forewarned, so many thanks! I was intending to use flex track, but again following your advice, I gritted the teeth and ponied up for a full set of settrack. So glad I did - made life much easier. I'd like to say I managed a perfect job but it wasn't; I can't drill a straight hole to save my life and I found that the holes for the metal rods where a little off. Assuming that the laser cut curves are good (they are), I had to cut back the wooden plates that go over the rods and cover the ends of the section pieces to allow the curves/track to follow good circles despite the rods not being in exactly the right place. Not pretty but I may have got away with it. Also used your super handy excel helix spreadsheet. You're a star! I'm visiting the NEC show on Sunday. Might see you around. All the best, Ed

@@ChadwickModelRailwayI’ve just remembered one thing about my helix which you might find useful. I had one joint between pieces of track, at a baseplate, where there appeared to be a slight vertical kink. I used a couple of bits of a super elevation kit from Westhill Wagon Works to smooth it out.
