He had kidney failure which caused him to go on kidney Dialysis... the port in his arm is called a Fistula and the Dialysis center kept him alive through using the Fistula... he got a kidney transplant now but the Fistula is in his arm forever in case his new kidney rejects and has to go back on Dialysis
