Freeride snowboarding in Finland's oldest national park l Arctic Lines

Спорт

It's time for the final mission from Southern Lapland before heading back north.
When it comes to freeriding in Finnish Lapland, Pyhä ski resort and the national park offer many unique opportunities. This area is the most diverse natural playground in Southern Lapland.
The lines in Pyhä aren't the longest but they can be demanding and you need to be ready to work the problems if you want to attempt a line in this area. Especially when the snowpack has been unstable most of the winter.
Enjoy!

    WOW! It says a lot if I, an avid backcountry skier, have to admit that I can't wait to see a snowboarder master every single of the "30 lines above the Arctic Circle"! The video quality, the choreography...and not at least your honesty about how you feel during your experiences makes me relate and want to watch every second of it. Compliments to your camera guy as well!

    Nice work! I can relate and appreciate the stoke you get from riding the smaller novelty type of lines near home, especially since we know your capable of doing much bigger lines. Some special and unique things to enjoy on splitboard adventures like these. Keep doing your thing!

    Thank you. Appriciated. Stoke is where it's at. You don't always need big lines for that;) But in many ways I like to use these smaller ones as good training grounds and to treat them with same respect as big ones makes it very interesting.

    I don't know the avalanche danger that day nor the snow pack condition. It sounded like it was a tough call with the potential slap at the most exposed section. Can you provide insights in your decision making process to give this a go?

  • @AnttiAuttiChannel

    @AnttiAuttiChannel

    Hi, yes the danger was considerable on isolated areas. I made the decision for the attempt based on the fact that there was a narrow area where the snow hadn't accumulated as much. The biggest snow accumulation was on top of the chute so It would have been very easy to trigger if I had descended the route straight down but instead I chose to go down where I climbed up because this was the spot where the accumulation was minimum. Basically, this slab was an isolated pocket which was possible to avoid by making a conservative approach by riding and route choice.

    @@AnttiAuttiChannel thanks for sharing. Insightful to see how you as a pro approach it and what you consider for your final decision 👏

    @@AnttiAuttiChannel I had Felix's question in my mind as well, and this answer provided important insights to your decision making process. From the video I got a feeling that you decided to drop in despite the red flags waving thus pushing your limit of acceptable risk level. The danger here is that over time you will get used to that new level of risk , and without noticing it yourself, the basis for your decision making has changed permanently. The fact that you got away with something before easily occupies your head and it becomes a habit to make the same decision again. From your answer above it is obvious that you steered away from the wind slab, but for someone who is not reading these comments you might be giving a potentially dangerous example. However, I really appreciate it how you explained the danger and prepared for the line by choosing the bottom approach so that you can assess the conditions on the way up. Perhaps in the next video, you could elaborate your decision to drop (or to turn back home) a bit more, especially if there are identified hazards. Anyways, great riding, great vids, great project, great rider, great lines. Easily my favourite content in the internet at the moment.

    @@attemoilanen4848 thanks for your comment. I fully agree with you that more insights is good to share about decisions making and this is something we as a crew always talk about when making the episodes. I'm also happy that there is room for these type of conversations to have in the comment field of the video because it just not always possible to add all necessary information in the video itself. I highly appreciate you taking the time to write here and share your thoughts! Thanks!
