Been freelancing full-time as a designer for a little over 1.5 years now and everything you said is exactly on point. My biggest struggle has been keeping my schedule structured when I have less clients. It always takes a long time to get my schedule back up again after it falls off. Also the loneliness can really suck. I really wish I had coworkers without having a boss.

My advice to you is to build up a network of other designers where you can share ideas, inspire each other or just have a social club with.

I have given up on Instagram completely. I can’t keep up with the algorithm, competing with other designers with thousands of followers, and the constant need to post.

I get that, I still try to post new work and make some reels when I’m feeling it, but the pressure over there and unpredictable algorithm can be annoying.

Thanks for sharing! I'm not a freelancer but I do work from home ever since graduating in 2020. I do agree that is it is an amazing experience to have an home office right after graduation and I love it!! On the flipside the isolation side of it is very real even tho I tend to enjoy it most times haha :D

I stumbled up on your video while researching things I can do for passive income as a designer. I've been working corporate (Hate it) and doing my graphic and web design for over 15 years now and I LOVE when I'm working from home. I consider myself an extrovert, but I love the alone time without the distractions of the office. When I feel like I need some "people time" I will take myself out or like you said go and hang out with friends or family. This usually feels that need of being around others. I'm sooooo ready to do my business full-time and get out of corporate. Yes, our type of work can fluctuate, but it's so rewarding. Thanks for the tips!

Great info!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m a 3 year graphic designer, 25 year artist. I’ve been teaching myself and it’s been rough without peer/mentor help but I feel I’m getting. Im finally making a little bit of money. In 2020 I lost my job that I’ve had since 2003 thanks to Covid and my diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis which halted my usual type of work, so I fell back on my art skills to try and pay the bills. Im about to start cold emailing and I’m a tad bit scared but all the way hungry so it has to be done especially since I have more than one mouth to feed under this roof. Im glad to see that I’ve mostly been following the things your touching on in this video. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’ve felt lost for a bit but now I’ve got some hope. Thank you! Keep it up

Have you ever thought about trying to fix the isolation thing by just keeping a few friends close by in case you want to call them or send them images of what you’re working on? I feel like a co-op of freelancers would be really useful

Thank you very much Jesse, I came across this video and your channel by pure accident and I will treasure these tips very carefully. It's a really difficult time for me, in the last two months I've cut ties with all my "bad clients" and now I'm starting from scratch to make a change in my career as a Graphic Designer. Unfortunately it is not easy, given that at the moment, having no work, I am completely confused and weighed down by the situation, especially for my mental health. But thanks to your advice, a light of hope has come back to me to put myself under it and start growing. Thank you very much indeed. I will continue to follow you with great pleasure. ❤

I'm just starting to ramp up my freelance career and really take it seriously. This video came at the perfect time, thanks! It will be a few years before I get to your level, but my only concern I have is that a few years down the line, i really want to get into content creation too, but without being exclusively focused on design. I may be thinking a bit too far ahead, but i just don't want to be pigeon holed in my creativity.

Solid advice Jesse, I appreciate these types of videos, they're very inspiring and helpful. Once I am through design school I want to freelance as soon as possible, I have wanted to work for myself ever since I started working. Can't wait until that day! Do you think it is best to start out working for a company and then ease into freelancing?

Hi, first time commenting on another video. Thank you for doing what you do. I've heard plenty of designers suggest a savings account but what if you leave a full-time office job to focus on a contract gig that you already have lined up and now you could leave your office job to pursue freelancing and contract work? Would you recommend it?

What do you find to be your most consistent types of clients in design? Specifically, is it print, package design, building websites, social media ads, or something else? My struggle has always been to find the bigger needs in a given market that is continually changing.

  • @JesseNyberg
