angus504 I’m well aware of the issues with Crossrail, I used to work on it before joining LU. My point is if you’re getting a month free travel on the ‘Goblin’ because of the delays in rolling out new trains, imagine how long you could get free travel on Crossrail for because of all the mishaps.

Robert Hindle: My guess is it’s tied into some existing system for giving refunds for “operational issues”. Hence the email Geoff got at the end. Behind the scenes someone’s running a script to extract all the qualifying journeys and then pushing that data into the refund system. For a “one off” probably a lot easier than changing the whole system not to charge you in the first place.

No wonder it was not explained. So you can travel anywhere in London for free for a month as long as you break your Journey for 20 mins on the GoBlin (tea break). Like Geoff I thought it was only free travel on that line, but rather it is for GoBlin station customers. Pity the transfer customers using interchanges without pink readers.

I saw a chap with a camera get on at Leyton Midland Road, and I thought “That’s Geoff Marshall from all the stations!” You got off at Wanstead Park, and I was travelling to Barking so didn’t have time to come up and say hello. Keep up the good work with your great travelogue about the nation’s railways!

Thanks very much for this. A day after this video dropped I got my refund email, I did 4 journeys one one day but I capped at £3.40 spend on the Goblin line. I was however expecting £6 refund as it said you would get the individual fares refunded even if you capped. Called the OYSTERCARD Helpdesk, they were clueless said I needed to speak to a senior so arranged a callback. This didn’t materialise so I chased and had to go through the whole thing again. Senior explained they’d had no training or briefing about the free travel as it wasn’t something they were involved in. Refund reference also wasn’t one of theirs. He did process a manual refund of £6 as opposed to the difference as a gesture of goodwill. Can’t believe however that the TFL Helpdesk got no queries on this.

Yes, my Hungarian friends keep telling me this stereotype that it's always raining here in England. I can't say enough that this is not the case. 😉😂

Well, they say the same for Hamburg. meanwhile it's not true on two reasons: first, only a quarter of the year it rains. and second, most rain days are just, that it rains for some minutes, then 2-4 hours of sunshine and then rain again. That's a "rain day", although you enjoy most the time rain free.

I do like that the 345's and 710's have the roundel on the front of them.

Quick note: The £1.50 travel off-peak in zones 2-6 is only TfL set fares and not Overground in the Greater Anglia area either. So Elstree - West Hampstead - Gospel Oak - Seven Sisters may not be free and will certainly cost more than £1.50 initially. Same with Barking - Blackhorse Road - Seven Sisters - Enfield Town.

In about 1990 there was a train strike and if you had a season ticket you had to queue up at the ticket office where you bought it and they would give you a pro-rata refund in cash. The bloke gave me too much. Bolshie NUR member doing it on purpose? We'll never know...

Great vlog I’ll be in London in November

There are similar discounts here in HK. For instance, when four MTR lines were delayed for 6 hours, there was half price for adults on a weekend after that, and a flat fare of HK$1 (£0.1) for all other passengers. However, it is not as good as free travel, so I want free travel on MTR after severe delays.

I noticed on the Victoria Line train maps, many still don't show Overground at Seven Sisters and Walthamstow Central. It looks like stickers have been removed from that section of the map, but they may have been the ones showing that section temporarily closed a few years ago.

OK - excellent points. I forgot about stations with multiple lines running thorough them. And they may want some money back from the train manufacturer. Thank you!

He has been to #AllTheStations in the UK, but that does sound like it could be fun. It costs money though. Would you back a Kickstarter or Patreon to fund sending Geoff out of London? One thing I would like to see Geoff do, is the regional equivalents of the Tube Challenge. He likes to do the Park Run stuff, so combining a trip to say Liverpool with a world record attempt to do all the Metro stations as fast as possible, could be a laugh.

In New York City, MasterCard ran a similar offer to promote the new OMNY fare payment system on the NYC Subway (which is built by Cubic Transportation Systems, the same company responsible for the Oyster system in London). For us, it was fairly straightforward. Tap in with your contactless MasterCard twice on Friday, and they’d refund your money for those taps. And we don’t have zones, just a single flat rate to travel for up to two hours (which is enough time to get basically anywhere in the city). It was pretty rad. Also, what’s up with Bombardier? They screwed up a new trainset delivery for MTA New York City Transit a few years ago, and now they’re late on delivery for these TfL trains?

I like the new class 710 and the 345. We've got some decent new trains for once!

Why? Because most NR lines south of the river are still under the control of privately owned train operating companies (TOCs) who insist on charging extra. A move to change this was blocked by the previous Transport Secretary because most such routes stray outside Greater London and he didn't want transport in his Surrey constituency under the control of London - although Metropolitan Line commuters in Herts and Bucks seem quite happy with such a situation. South Londoners are generally resigned to the situation, but it has led to gross overcrowding at Vauxhall, as you can game the system there because it is in both Zones 1 and 2 and thus changing to the Tube there instead of at Waterloo works out cheaper.

We do have an equivalent of these trains the Class 710s third rail overhead wires the Metro North M8 third rail only variant for the M8 is the M9 first entered service last Wednesday on Port Jefferson Line starting from the 1970 electrified station Huntington to Long Island City. Geoff you got come to New York City and compare our commuter trains to yours in London and Norwich area. Speaking of class 755 it's equivalent in the New York City area are NJ Transit ALP-45DP LIRR DM30AC and Amtrak/Metro North P32AC-DM Class 710 M8/M9

you can get the 1/3 Oyster discount with the : 16-25 Railcard, 26-30 Railcard, Senior Railcard, Disabled Railcard, HM Forces Railcard, and the Annual Gold Card (which is what i have)

I saw Geoff’s Video and got an Exeter central to Exeter st David’s gold card £144 annually I work and live in london travel zone 1-5 and more than half of my journeys are off peak It does save you so much money

They are currently training drivers on the Watford-Euston line and have one or two 710s running in the peak. Off-peak it's driver training train.

I’d Love to know the etymology of Gospel Oak. I imagine John Wesley preaching under a spreading oak tree during an open air revival.

I may be wrong, but isn't TFL making the free ride more difficult on themselves as well as their customers? If one has to tap in and tap out when entering and leaving any of the stations along this route, would it not be simpler to just not deduct the charge from your Oyster Card at the outset? In other words, your Oyster Card balance is the same amount when you tapped in and later when you tap out. Or does TFL need to do refunds to see how often customers are using this line during the promotion? Just wondering.

I think at Barking (like most stations) there is a common ticket barrier for all lines so the card reader wouldn't know whether you were going to use the Goblin, H&C, District of Fenchurch St lines.

They used three shortened Class 378 (4 cars instead of 5 cars) trains for many months to fill in for missing stock when the Class 172s were removed from the GOBLIN to go elsewhere. The unused unit from each Class 378 train were parked up on a siding in storage during that time. There were two 710s and three 378s in service for quite a while, with a gap in the timetable where the sixth unit should have been. With the arrival of the remainder of the new Class 710 units, the Class 378s are gone from the GOBLIN, presumably reunited with their stored units that were temporarily detached.

@@florencegomer7937 314s couldn't have been used as they do not have the cameras needed for one person operation on that line and there were no guards available who had the necessary training to both operate a 314 (or indeed a 313 or 315) and to work on the Goblin

Just to be clear on Andrew's comment. The GOBLIN has a full service using 710s but the rest of the trains that will be interchangeable between the GOBLIN and the Watford-Euston line aren't ready yet. I think there are about 7/8 trains that can be used, the GOBLIN only needs 6.

It’s amazing they take the money out straight away but can take up to two weeks to pay it back. So they get to keep all the interest.

I suspect there's a lot of manual working going on behind the scenes to process refunds. It's an unusual and temporary scenario, and as this video demonstrates there are many variables.

I recall a class 33 with 3TC set for a short while, never saw any 121s, prior to the 150s there were 117s, prior to those 115s, before that a very mixed fleet with some 104s, 108s, 119s.

Almost certainly not: the only reason the GOB passengers are getting the free travel is because the older (class 172) trains had to leave before the replacement 710s arrived, with the service getting heavily reduced as a result.

TfL Rail is formed of the services that'll get absorbed into Crossrail's Elizabeth Line. The Overground services are... a range of suburban services with the East London Line extension? Not sure how to describe them

For most reasons, the differences don't matter apart from the fact that Crossrail services cross central London, whereas Overground services for the most part don't?

@@fetchstixRHD the major difference (as you mentioned) is really that tfl rail is part of the Elizabeth line and has separate train designs. It's true to say that overground is in few zone 1 stations, however the same can be said for tfl rail as it is now (until the Elizabeth line turns it into an underground service across central London which of course changes it entirely from the Overground) so ultimately it comes down to the Elizabeth line preparations I believe

I feel I'm missing out on this as I have a 60+ Oyster card so I get free travel anyway! Tomorrow I'll be using it to visit all the least used Tube stations in a day- I don't know if anyone's done this before, or indeed if it's possible. I'll let you know. PS I'm enjoying All the Stations, a bit late I know but now I'm retired I have the time to watch things like that.

This is free travel on this line due to late rollout of trains. That isn’t the case with cross rail is it.
