Sitting down having a chat about Borderline Personality Disorder. We touch on the nine traits of Borderline Personality Disorder and talk about how Emily's mental illness affects her today. She opens up about her fear of abandonment, anger and anxiety. Emily also talks about Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and shares a top tip you need to deal with a Borderline Personality Disorder Crisis. she also explains the difference between your emotional mind and your reasonable mind and how you should bring them together to make a wise mind.
If you feel you are having difficulty with a mental illness please seek professional help from a Psychiatrist or a Doctor. Emily has been through a very tough crisis, with her husband Tom and professionals to support her. However Tom and Emily are not and nor do they claim to be professionals. they are living proof that with the right support you can get better and learn to control your mental illness.
Emily has suffered with mental illness her whole life, it all came to a head after the birth of her second sons 1st birthday in 2015. Having already suffered with post natal depression from her 1st son she was determined to not let it get the better of her again. She managed to hide it not only from her husband but also from herself, convincing herself she was ok. One suicide attempt soon became two and so on. In between suicide attempts she was self harming by cutting herself. She would lock herself away in her bedroom for weeks on end. She was in and out psychiatric wards for the best part of a year before eventually getting a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. Eventually after 18 months of pure hell with no signs of improvement, Emily was given a room on a specialist Borderline Personality Disorder ward. There is only 2 of its kind in England and Emily considers herself very lucky to have been given that opportunity. The admission lasts for 12 months, during which time you receive 2 rounds of DBT, she was also then diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder . During this whole period of Emily being ill, Tom was forced to give up his job and become the main care giver for their 2 children and Emily. Five years on from that first suicide attempt Emily is 2 and a half years free of any self harm or suicide attempts. She knows there is no cure for Borderline Personality Disorder but she has learnt to live with it and control it. She still suffers daily with anxiety but has made huge steps.
