Free Jeep Cherokee XJ Project First Look (Ep.1)

Sometimes good deals on cars just stumble into you, like this free 1996 Jeep Cherokee! 4.0L inline six Sport model. Swanky! Ran when parked five years ago, how bad could it be?
This short first episode covers towing the Jeep to West Virginia, trying and failing to start it, and letting it sit around for a long time. Don't expect this to be a particularly regular series, which is why I'm releasing such a short episode for it. But give it some time, we will bring it back to life and do something fun with it!
Timeline of filming: July 24th, 2017 (Towed to WV) - October 4th, 2017 (Attempted to Start)
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Silver - Riot
3:11 Stay with You - Silent Partner
(All music provided by KZread's Audio Library royalty free.)

I hope to see more about this XJ in a future episode cause these Jeeps are a lot of fun. Its interesting what people give away when they don't know how to fix something. I just bought a 98' XJ Sport with 171k miles for $400. It runs, drives, goes through the gears, slides right into 4lo. I snagged it from a girl whom got scared cause it needed some rust work. I got the rust fixed and now I have myself a clean little 4.0L XJ. I have a similar story with a 92' Wrangler YJ I recently finished building although I went crazy with the YJ; Gibson Header w/ 6-1 primary, JBA catless midpipe to a Magnaflow exhaust system; throttle body spacer, brand new 2017 OEM wheels, etc, etc. $4000 in parts later I have a sweet little YJ that sits there; Cause I'm always driving my 08' JK. ;) I enjoy your videos and the way you narrate them. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.

Never use that much starter fluid. It will wash all the oil from the cylinder walls and your pistons will immediately scratch the cylinder walls

Nice, more old vehicles. I had the same fit on a '93 ford ranger. Turned out to be the ECM relay ground. Take a stranded wire and put it in the terminal for the ecm relay ground then shove the relay back in. Then put the other end of the wire on the negative terminal of the battery, or screw it to the fender. If it then works, it's a ground issue. I don't know how my ranger was capable of running on starting fluid with a bad ecm relay ground, but it sure was for some reason.

There was cut wires I had to solder for it to crank and start. I'm gonna check the compression and oil tomorrow and go from there.

I had a k5 for a couple years recently. Was a great vehicle and was a lot of fun off road. I regret selling it, but was having major issues with the TBI system up here in Alaska. Anytime it was below zero the fuel would not atomize and would just flood. My buddy who bought back from me is still having the same issue and he has replaced everything short of a new short block. Anyways, those Jeep up here are not cheep, I've been looking for one this last 7-8 years that is not abused. They all have 200-300k miles and need tons of work and the owner typically is asking 4-6k for their garbage.

Hey, Quick Tip: DONT USE STARTING FLUID! I thought it was fine to use it even though everyone told me not to. And then last week I used it and it made my car do an intake backfire and it literally blew up. The valve cover was blown clean off into a million pieces along with the spark plug wires and some metals from the crankshaft. I have pictures to prove it if you want to see them DM me. Just trying to warn people that it will actually blow up if you use starting fluid. It is a gas engine, not a starting fluid engine. Good luck.

  • @FuzzyDiceProjects

    @FuzzyDiceProjects

Good warning, really. Starting fluid has a reputation for doing that, but I have been lucky so far. If we cared more about the car we wouldn't have run it off of just starter fluid. I hope you didn't get hurt!

I have a 1988 Cherokee but its only 2 wheel drive not 4x4 which is dumb. I don't see the point to making a 2-wheel drive Jeep Cherokee....one day it just wouldn't start so I just got fed up with it and its been sitting ever since, then I picked up a 2000 GMC jimmy 4x4 for cheap which is what I currently drive. If my Cherokee was 4WD then maybe I would of looked into fixing it. UPDATE: I just bought a 1994 Cherokee xj for $300, high miles 200k but it runs good.

Glad to hear it! I mostly use a Sony RX100IV for the video and audio, with a Tascam DR-05 for some of the ADR voiceover. I wouldn't recommend a RX100 though, image and audio quality is fantastic but the battery life is atrocious and it overheats in even warm weather. Been looking for a better camera solution but keep buying car parts instead haha.

FuzzyDicePimp I'm looking for something decent and cost efficient to buy. I do have a go pro hero 3 but I'm not sure if that's good enough. Plus I need a stand for it. I too also have a penchant for buying many many car parts. I have a 1990 BMW 325is that I've owned since 1996 and I'm looking to buy a 1991 S10 Blazer. I'm recovering from my last several "projects".

    Is it just bad gas?

No, the fuel pump isn't even running, no pressure in the fuel rail. Likely old gas that gummed up inside the pump and clogged it, though.

FuzzyDicePimp I definitely understand. The 280 project introduced me to your channel. I enjoy all of your Videos, can't wait for the finale.

Yep, spraying straight into the throttle body. Have had suggestions to hit the tank with a 2x4 while cranking, will try that out!

Haven't worked on it since this video, but we still need to fix it and drive it back to Maryland at least. Nothing yet, though.
