I almost got divorced twice as a recruiter. It was the worst assignment I've ever worked. My wife and I saw marriage counselling. I helped two people successfully into the Army Band program. One young man became an Army Ranger and later a State trooper, his mother sent me Christmas cards every year until she died. I also helped a young lady into a job with intelligence work, who I later met in theater in RC-East as a young NCO. That was the best part of the job, I helped people get to a place where they could make a decision for themselves. It was rewarding and I grew personally and professionally.

@Buck Dewey Just purposely screw up the "practice calls" made during classes that simulate talking to potential recruits, and I was also surprised (not very though) on the devious tactics they teach you to get young people to sign up....when I was at the point of being failed an instructor talked to me and said he will recommend I get dropped from the class, I said I accept that, I told him I was not recruiter material but instead was a "field/motorpool" soldier who was much more comfortable in those environments....so I left Ft. Jackson and got orders for the 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, TX, where I spent seven good years doing the job I signed up for.

My recruiter came to my house then after meeting my parents and talking he asked me to step outside where he told me he had 17 years in and I better not fuck this up. I went on to retire. My recruiter is an old as dirt Marine but still works. How do I know? He fixes my telecommunications equipment at my Govt agency. Everytime I see him I get to tell him to not fuck up the phones. It's amazing how small the world is. Dude never lied to me in fact he may have been the most brutally honest guy I ever met.

Apologies for painting a broad brush but this used to happen a lot. I am also very well aware of some of the guys who went into various AO's during the 80's and 90's, some to fly a desk and others to move onto bigger challenges that got bitter over the years. I suppose it was out of place for that comment and I do apologize but I can't help but feel for those who got suckered because life handed them a bad deck of cards if that makes sense. I was never a recruiter but I was on recruiters assistance for about a month. I had to go through that list and call people for almost 10 hours today and I did get yelled at by an angry two angry parents. We weren’t allowed to leave until we got at least 8 appointments. So that was 8 to 10 hours of phone calls a day for four weeks, and it still wasn’t as bad for us as it was for the recruiters. Though it was that day that I swore that I would never become a recruiter of any kind while I was in.

By the ending I felt that. I wasn’t in military. They say it’s not cold calling or cold knocking, but it might as well be. We’re expected to take the blame when no one is wanting. It’s our fault that we’re spending so much time trying to please our boss to have money for the girl but because we’re trying to support our family, we lose them. The world is so backwards and people truly don’t get the appreciation they deserve while some other ass hat gets attention just because he’s loud or manipulative.
