You broke the cipher! Nine years ago, Mr @z s, by imagining the lead guitar sounds coming out of Fred's mouth you figured out that Fredrik Thordendal's solos on Secrets of the Unknown demo were an ALIEN LANGUAGE!!!! The language of Thordendal's guitar string worshiping species, from the planet... uh, I don't know some far off alien planet, or some exotic moon somewhere. Fred comes from a species who speak with their guitars, he's actually considered a shitty speaker by his fellow aliens standards, he sucks at guitar compared to them, they'd blow you the fuck away if you ever heard their great-and-poweful species' equivalent of say, Buckethead. Theres been a few times in my life where music came out, and no one ever matched it again. Fred Thordendal's solo career is like that, even Meshuggah somehow pales in comparison. I cant name a single of the big "progressive metal" bands on tour right now who take you this far outside of planet earth. Im referring to bands like Periphery, Born of OSiris, etc not classic prog acts that are still going

@EB1089 Yeah I read in Guitar World (i think it was) of an interview with him that he said he was brought up with jazz because his dad listened to it. A lot of people try to over analyze Meshuggah's music by saying they use weird meters and stuff but really their music isn't exactly "musical". They really break the rules of music and do their own thing, its just crazy how it all works out in the end. In my opinion that is true uniqueness, where most bands really suffer from copycat techniques
@warjeffeagle14 жыл бұрын
@mvunit3 No problem, always glad to turn a fellow fan onto good music, new artists, etc. I think he is recording it with 2 different drummers as well. Dirk Verbeuren from Soilwork and I wanna say Morgan Agren again too. I may be wrong, but I think that's right. You can actually read some studio updates from Verbeuren somewhere (google it), where he talks about how he and Fredrik jammed out for hours, just doing improv drum patterns for Fredrik to play on top of. Should be badass. Can't wait!

yeah, I mean I'm sure he's studied holdsworth's work extensively. Also holdsworth openly describes the sorts of scales and chords he prefers, and I bet fredrik understands exactly how to recreate his technique. at the same time I find it strange that sometimes fredrik has incredibly simplistic solos, that are like 1 or two notes repeated (especially live) despite that, they still work with meshuggah stuff hehe.

Can it get any better? I just can't stop listening to it over and over again. This is what I'd call complete musicianship...
this is effing amazing
This kicks ass!! I'm mad I didn't discover this sooner! \m/
Sublevels at the end
I love this
So good .......Amazin
Most of this (notes and sound) sound like it was inspired by Holdsworth's Metal Fatigue-are prog rock. We all know (from FT himself, that AH is a major influence, in terms of style - more than a coincidental nod... Its great of course, but frankly, I miss the implied chaos of SNW - which was mind-blowing... This just seems like Frederik phoning in a circa 90's prog album...
good news man , thank you very much.
absolutely!
You can really hear that Fredrik is inspired by Allan Holdsworth in this one
im loving this thordendal fusion work,, its very holdsworth ,bill connors esque....im loving the fuck out of this
This is just one reason why I love the metal scene, the people aren't so closeminded and make music they like, not music that follows the rules. There are no rules.
This is GOOD Music.
goosebumps
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow... YEAH!!!! IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love it
it kicks ass : o
Totally agree - sure it sounds like him but dude had his thing and it is most certainly beautiful
@mvunit3 Lucky for you, and everyone else, he is releasing another solo album! He's recording it right now. I can't wait!!!!!! It can't get here soon enough.
Reminds me of snes era JRPG game soundtracks. Excellent stuff.
Never heard this tune before... It is really really Holdsworth-ish, even the synth sounds. Cool.
Try to find the song 4.15 Bradford Executive, I think its on the Album called "SAND" by ALLAN HOLDSWORTH
i listen to this everyday, 333 times
@Pitacle2009 I know! I found that out a few weeks ago. I'm SOOO excited for it.
Fredrik should do more solos on meshuggah, just like on None and Destroy Erase Improve.
Reminded me on Steve Vai's 'Passion and Warfare' album. Great stuff!
Allan Holdsworth influence, Fredrik is amazing!
Very lovely prog/jazz-fusion tribute to Holdsworth!! I like to imagine the end of "Sublevels" as something inspired by Allan's "Material (Un)real".
After hearing this song, I felt myself feeling bad for the fact that deaf people will never be able to hear such musicianship.

Not true, they can feel it vibrationally through their hands and body. I have played guitar for deaf people and have seen them smile ear to ear when they placed their hands on my acoustic guitar and felt it. Badass shit man!
Fedt at Høre thordendal i den sammanhæng :-)
Bleed is in a major key.
@Purkinje90 Actually, Fredrik Thordendal is working on a new solo album. If you search for Fredrik Thordendal on youtube, you will find a channel that has this name : it is his. You'll see that he's in the recording process. What a good news ! Is'nt it ?

@EB1089 Yeah I read in Guitar World (i think it was) of an interview with him that he said he was brought up with jazz because his dad listened to it. A lot of people try to over analyze Meshuggah's music by saying they use weird meters and stuff but really their music isn't exactly "musical". They really break the rules of music and do their own thing, its just crazy how it all works out in the end. In my opinion that is true uniqueness, where most bands really suffer from copycat techniques
Can't wait!
dude, who DOESN'T love that little riff? haha
This guy is amazing. I wish I knew what this was from.
wish i could make my music sound this good, Fredrik is God!!!!
seconded.

It also sounds like Tathagata (the ending of Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects' Sol Niger Within album).
I will! thanks
yeah its kind of mind boggling when i hear him say he doesnt know music theory.i guess some people are just naturally gifted
@blackdeathgrind I'd buy it for sure, those two are musical geniuses!
3:32 girl from ipanema motive...
DAMN cool indeed, one of the best live as well with Meshuggah. Anyone heard the solo album by Tosin Abasi? He calls himself Animals as Leaders, pretty awesome stuff
had the guitar lick from 0:26 to 0:36 stuck on repeat in my head for months before remembering it was on this song.
This is really nicely done. Please continue the legacy (side project?) with some great guys like Anthony Crawford, Skulli or Jimmy Johnson and Husband, Coliaiuta or Wackerman.

Gary Novak too!
@ChicorelliC It's also in "Sublevels" from the "Destroy Erase Improve"- Album
If I didn't know any better I'd swear this is Sir Holdsworth playing metal haha! Trying to play like Allan is fucking impossible!
@onthevirg Yes! Those dudes tear it up. I love their "Simpsons" inspired cover. Awesome stuff
yeah, I mean I'm sure he's studied holdsworth's work extensively.
@needlearmor Hell yeah! War Damn Eagle right back at ya! I can't believe theres another Auburn guy that likes Fredrik. My all time favorite band is Meshuggah hands down, and there's not even close 2nd. You dont find many people with such good music taste down on the Plains. Its mostly crappy radio rock and country. Cam 4 Heisman ;-)
@suspect157 Chris Poland is no different. He was also hugely influenced by Holdsworth. Chris is an amazing musician when it comes to guitar, especially jazz fusion guitar. So if a guy like Chris Poland with such a distinctive style tone and diversity can't understand theory, I understand why someone equally talented ( like Fredrik ) by all rights would not be able to either. His ears make the sense he is a learner by ear, as am I, as is chris poland. It's a wonderful gift really.
amazing! still waiting to hear something from marten?
I've always liked this. I wish there was a 250kb/s or higher res
Big Allan Holdsworth influence....I love it. wish I knew where to buy this if it is indeed available.
@jadedmastermind to me, it's even better than missing time. this here is a true masterpiece. hopefully, he will do something like SNG, again.
He told me he's workin' on it. Gotta be patient!
fredrik the only dude i could genuinely mistake for allan holdsworth
Amazing demo. Ending kind of sounds like the ending of Sub Levels from Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve.

The chord sequence is exactly the same used in that song. Makes me remember to the ending of Allan Holdsworth's "Material Real".
imagining if Fredrik made an album w/ Holdsworth...
@Power2theFlyingV haha, wow. i've always heard holdsworth in his playing, but that is probably the best way to put it.
Agreeed!
*Fredrik Thordendal eats a lot of electronic abacus for breakfast.*
