Fred Dibnah's steam crane at Mount Sion, Radcliffe
Mr H takes a look at the Victorian era Mount Sion steam crane in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester that has sat by the the side of the now defunct Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal since the late 1800's and featured briefly in one of the late great Fred Dibnah's TV documentaries in 1999 and whose preservation the legendary Steeplejack had continued to support until he sadly passed away in 2004.

Fred is the cliche of grandads he’s that loving charming man.
nice one mr h thank you and your family
I pass that when i go for a bike ride, got me interested in the whole canal, The crane needs to be restored to its original state, its a great piece of history.
Thanks for reviewing this one too!
Visited Dibnah locations 2 wks ago thanks to your videos & great information, Thanks from Somerset
Down at the bottom of the hill there used to be a water powered hoist. Following the canal all the way into Bolton is a very interesting walk. There is a lot of stuff in the woods behind Darcy Lever station.
There's also a small crane still in it's original place on the Trent and Mersey canal near Swarkstone, another great video Mr H and family

In the video about the Lever Bridge pub Mr H was parked at the side of my old house.. Fred was a nearby neighbour. Nice bloke.. was more often seen in the Bradford Arms actually.. it didn't involve the steep brew after a skinfull.. lmao.

Thanks Chris, and glad that you enjoyed the video. 👍
Interesting video mr h. Shame about that giant hogweed in the background. It is getting everywhere. It’s terrible around our way near Preston.
I commented on tbe other video about the state of the boiler and worried it could tip over. This looks like it is worse and could tip one day soon. I hope the friends of tbe crane, can add a bit of metal to the bottom to help keep it stood up. Shove a brick or large stone in tbe gaps people if you come across it :) Another good video Mr H
Brill vid😊
Interesting them old cranes well made to last that long . Shame Fred is no longer with us seeing him walk down that path .

Hi Gary,, these cranes like most things bourne out of the Victorian era were built to last which is why many Victorian structures such as bridges, tunnels and sewers are still with us and in use today. I've no doubt that despite sitting idle for decades that the chassis and main gears of this crane would still be serviceable if it were to be restored and put back into use. My guess is that this crane fell into disuse when the nearby coillery closed in 1949 and stopped supplying coal to the paper mill that replaced the bleachworks given Fred's age and his boyhood memory of seeing the crane idle but almost complete and the fact that it escaped being dismantled and scrapped for the war effort during WW2.
