FREAKY FRIDAY! (1976) FIRST TIME SEEING! *This can easily confuse a silly little Icelander!*

Ойын-сауық

I watched the 1976 film, Freaky Friday, starring Jodie Foster, Barbara Harris, John Astin, Marc McClure, and many others. I had seen the 2003 remake many years ago (although I don't remember a lot of it), so I had a vague idea of what I was getting into. However, this film turned out to be even freakier than I thought and some sentences were said that maybe should have been left unsaid!

"I wish I could switch places with her for just one day." Fun Fact: Jodie Foster was offered the Princess Leia role in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) around the time that this movie was in development when George Lucas had wanted to make the character young. Unfortunately, Foster was still under contract to Disney. There may have been a way for Foster to get out of the contract, but her mother decided to honor the contract and as such Foster contractually completed Freaky Friday (1976) for Disney. I would honestly love to visit the universe where Jodie Foster got the role of Princess Leia. Bonus Fact: The fake braces that Jodie Foster wears in the movie were designed in such a way so as to cover the cap between her top palate's two front teeth. Foster says on the DVD bonus feature that the dental bands had a vocal effect on her speech in the movie.

In her brief Disney period, Jodie also did a really cool little movie called Candleshoe that's a wee bit darker, but still has some slapstick antics. Check it out.

I just love that you're willing to include films on your channel that no one else (at least that I've seen) ever even touches!! Yes, the original movies are so often so superior, but almost always get ignored, forgotten or not even discovered! Thank you!! Also, this original version here was adapted from the book by its author, Mary Rodgers. Jodie Foster's first theatrical film was also from Disney, "Napoleon & Samantha". During the '70s, she was in 3 Disney films & 2 Scorsese films, surely a rare, if not unique, accomplishment, especially for such a young star & she also starred or appeared in various other '70s films to boot.

@@katreacts6843 Disney used Lindsay Lohan to star in a stream of remakes of its own movies, also including "The Parent Trap", which originally starred Hayley Mills. The "twins" effect the 1961 original used for wide shots must've been a pretty big deal for the time. Btw, there are 2 additional versions of "Freaky...", a 1995 TV movie & a 2018 musical, which must've been made for the Disney channel. Several great live-action Disney films from the '70s (which, as far as I know, have not yet been remade) are "The $1,000,000 Duck", "Snowball Express" & "The Apple Dumpling Gang" (a Western).

I love this movie! The remake is actually really good as well, but this is the original. It has me laughing out loud so many times... Like the laundry scene; the dog is like, "What the fuck are you doing, lady?!" And the most heartwarming scene to me was when the son tells her how much he loves his sister even though she treats him so bad.

I fully support watching both to compare. Each has little details that I like, but I think I prefer the original. There are other body swap comedies out there, like Vice Versa, if you enjoy the subgenre. John Astin looks so odd without his mustache. I always think of him as Gomez, so seeing his bare upper lip takes me a second to match the face with his voice 😅

Another solid Disney film that came out 5 years before I was born. Jodie Foster was excellent, as she usually is. She's a teen female Disney character who isn't trying to be a little princess. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis were in the remake and while it's not half bad, it's not as good as this. The 70s, 80s and especially 90s were filled with movies where kids talked like real kids, not a censored version of a parents' unrealistic expectations. They're not role models, they're just believable characters. Like Eddie Furlong was in Terminator 2. They have "attitude." The 90s were the "Attitude Era" or the "Era of Extreme," after all. It's not my favourite of the live action Disney films, but it's not half bad either. That's what I love about movies like My Girl and The Sandlot. The kids aren't sanitized. They're believable and there's a sincerity in what they say and do. The Sandlot had little boys being sexist - "You play ball like a girl!" But little boys are sexist. You're not supposed to like girls if you're a little boy. As long as it's not totally abusive, fine. You just hope they grow out of it with maturity and education. Kids are stupid. It's where they're at in their development and that's just how it is. As long as they're not over the top or physically violent, I don't have a problem with it, as long as they can look back on it as adults and go, "Weren't we something when we thought this, this and this were true? Glad we don't think the say way now!" Kids are supposed to be kids, and adults are supposed to be adults. The difference is, adults are supposed to know better. Kids aren't. You only learn by making mistakes and trying something, within reason. I prefer Jodie's performance in Silence of the Lambs, but here she's a believable kid, which works for her, both when she's in her own body and when she's switched with her mom. Adults have power. Kids don't. So I'm less concerned when a kid acts up, because they can be much more easily corrected. If you're 30 and you still think the same stupid things you did when you were 10 years old, then we could have a serious problem. Kids will be kids. Like George Carlin once said, "You want to help your children? Leave them the f alone!" If you haven't see it, My Girl is a film I think you would love. It's funny, tragic and believable. The little girl, Vada, played by Anna Chlumsky is fantastic and I'm not ashamed to say the kid who was the same age as her at the time had a bit of a crush. Her character was funny, tragic, flawed and scarred, yet resourceful and smart for her age. She was an "old soul." Still one of my favourite movies. The soundtrack is amazing and Dan Aykroyd, Macauley Culkin and Jamie Lee Curtis are great in it too. It's my favourite Macauley movie.

@@katreacts6843 both versions are great, though different. Once you swallow the two parents splitting up infants BS, the stories are great fun. Hayley Mills is a wonderful actress, who just turned 76! She played the girls' roles very well. Maureen O'Hara, the mother in the original, was one of the most beautiful women in movies, IMO.

I've seen all kind o f screw ups happening in marching band routines lol. there are a lot of iconic actors and character actors in this movie, you should look them up. For example, the maid played by Patsy Kelly who was a popular comedic actress from as far back as the 1930's on film and later TV. Kaye Ballard , the coach, and comedienne Ruth Buzzi, the opposing coach. Quite a few others...

Most people consider the remake better on account of the time period allowing for more humour. Women being in the workplace was more universally normal in 2003 which makes way more sense for the younger character to be thrown into in a body swap story - that and the 2000's era has funnier cringe to look back at and laugh.

Jodie Foster was a HUGE child Star in the 70’s when this came out (back when she was only “tomboyish” 🙄 )- She had also been a preteen hooker in Taxi Driver, a 20’s singer in Bugsy Malone, Becky Thatcher in probably the best movie version of Tom Sawyer, and even taken over Tatum O’Neal’s role in the TV version of Paper Moon. She also played a NY teen in an English mansion in Disney’s “Candleshoe”, also worth a D+ watch.

As for having time to yourself that was a big problem for many of my peers when I was in high school. They were over scheduled. Between school, after school clubs, sports, volunteer work, part-time job, chores, drivers Ed, SAT prep, homework, and projects, there was barely time to sleep never mind read and have hobbies.
