Fraser River Sockeye Salmon Bonanza | Fishing with Rod

20 million sockeye salmon are returning into the Fraser River in 2014! In this video feature we are right in the middle of the action! We join Bon Chovy Fishing Charters in Vancouver at the Fraser River mouth, trolling for thousands of sockeye salmon which are staging for the right tide before their river migration. The action is jam packed, it is a sockeye salmon bonanza!

    I remember fishing the mouth of the river in the early 70s when I was a kid. Dad rigged a green bucktail on the surface, trolling at 4-6 knots the action was non stop. Not sure how that would work today but it was pretty productive at the time. So much fun!

    Sockeye had a unique way of jumping straight up and flopping over on their side so you knew it was them.When they were passing by Sooke they were still feeders from dawn to about 9 30 A.M. You might still get one to snap at the bait through-out the day but they definately ate mainly in the early morning. CHEERS from Sooke!

    The bites at the Fraser River mouth seem to be more tide dependent than time dependent. For this particular trip, we were out in the middle of the afternoon and the action was definitely non-stop.

    I went out in Lund and we landed TONS of sockeye! Most were around 12 inches but we got a couple nice ones. We also went and caught ling cod there too!

    12 inches sockeye salmon? They're most likely 2 year old chinook or coho salmon if they are that big. Also there's no lingcod retention permitted in most of Area 29 in case you're unaware of it.

    Lachlan Thistlethwaite Nevermind, please disregard the previous comment. I thought you were fishing in a Lund boat at the Fraser River mouth, not the actual place Lund. I wish I was also fishing in Lund!

    We thought The sounder had something wrong with it but it was just a school of salmon so big the water was almost boiling! We let go all the small sockeye and a 2 pound chinook.

    When I say this I truly mean it that I enjoy all your videos you guys seem to have the best ones especially the background music is a lot of it it seems so trashy but yours I really enjoy the background music please don't change it don't go to Crazy rock bands or whatever the case may be because as soon as I hear that on something I think it's really ruins the idea fishing and make it into some kind of a rock whatever you want to call it I'd rather be relaxed and your music and your movies and all your work you guys put into it I appreciate it thank you keep up the good work I'm gel from down in Washington state and I fish The Bays the lakes to streams and all that stuff to sew tight lines

    Were you guys using fly rods and reels with a good adjustable drag? Sinking line or plain fishing mono/flouro line? Looks pretty neat :)

    Ethan Wong Those are not fly fishing rods and reels. It's a mooching set-up. The reels are Islander MR2s and the rods are Shimano Convergence. Check out the last five minutes of the video for more information.

    Nice! We've been going out to the mouth for the past month, and we still haven't landed a single Sockeye. I have no idea what we're doing wrong...

    Fish Repellant Finding the schools is pretty important. Once the schools are located, you can draw them to your lures on the flashers and dummy flashers. We mostly trolled alone while hundreds of boats could be seen in the far horizon, so lots of boats don't always indicate where the fish are. Having the right terminal tackle helps as well. These Gibbs Delta guide series flashers and Yamashita hootchies were just amazing during this trip.

    Hey Rod did you ever target sockeye in the thompson river? If so what do you use for casting?

  • @FishingwithRod

    @FishingwithRod

    I've never made it up to the Thompson River this year unfortunately. For sockeye salmon in rivers, I've had success by float fishing with krill or deli shrimp.

    What is the advantage of a mooching setup? I dont see any over a baitcaster or a spinning

  • @FishingwithRod

    @FishingwithRod

    9 жыл бұрын

    lee19702 There's no real advantage on a mooching setup except it gives you a better experience when playing a fish. You can certainly use a baitcasting or spinning setup for this fishery. In fact, a lighter spinning setup can be very enjoyable when fighting these fish.

    Upon looking at those Michael Biat hoochie lures I see the lure has a swivel in the head, and a hook, but how is the hook attached to the swivel. looking closer it appears there's some kind of a clip. What's it called and where does one purchase those clips and the hoochie lures. Thanks

    the sockeye fishing in the contiguous 48 states continues to be poor. with the all of the damming and silt covered spawning beds. The province of B.C. and the state of Alaska are the hope for the future of the species.
