Franz's Fine Dining: Wagashi Gift Box and... Wait, What?

Dinner of champions. What can I say, guys, the life of a spy isn't all poolside martinis with mysterious Russian women and haute cuisine at diplomatic functions... sometimes you just have to settle for some kumquats and dried squid.

Yaaay! *clap clap clap clap clap* XDDDD I paid an antiques dealer extra to include that in a recent purchase. He was very confused but willing to oblige. I really considered sending a recording of train sounds with it just for nostalgia. Oh, good times. -Ayn

Before I became a vegetarian, I used to eat dried squid and cuttlefish relatively often as a kid. If you like dried, salty snacks, you'll probably enjoy it. Depending on brand and freshness, it can be overly chewy, but it has a pleasant and distinct flavor, IMO. If anyone is looking for it in the US, try visiting your local Asian market, if you have one nearby. It seems to be a pretty common snack for east Asian countries, so it shouldn't be that hard to find if you have a Chinatown or something nearby.

For those who are interested, the description that Franz is holding into the camera at 5:15 roughly translates to something like this: "When eaten, the amber-colored flesh of fruit filled white white bean paste will gently spread an exquisite sweetness in your mouth. The natural sweetness of the Ichida kaki grown in the Nagano prefecture and the additional sweetness of the white bean paste harmonize excellently in your mouth."

Franz, I believe the characters on the packaging is a chinese poem from the Tang dynasty - not that I am any expert on the matter. The characters read 白日依山盡 黃河入海流 欲窮千里目 更上一層樓 which, with my very rudimentary classical chinese literacy, translates as a white sun sinks next to the hill side the yellow river flows into the sea if one wants to see further one should climb up a storey

Hi, Spy, The first big box you opened with the ornate characters said ことほぎの春 (Kotohogi no Haru) on the front. "Kotohogi" being a form of the verb "Kotohogu" which means to celebrate. Haru meaning "spring" or even "new year" in certain cases, as I imagine you already know. It appears to be a Wagashi maker. For the Shiroan snack. The explanation says its wrapped in "fruit pulp" (果肉), but doesn't specify which fruit. For the second one, it's actually 栗 (kuri) or "chestnuts". The outside is apparently some kind of crushed up chestnuts and the inside is a whole chestnut (the edible part). The cookie-like snack are called "Fukuwatari Senbei." Keep up the great videos!

  • @AGermanSpy

  • @AGermanSpy

It does sound strange until you consider that when mashed into paste, beans more or less take on the flavor of whatever you mix them with, so they make a perfect versatile filling for all sorts of sweets. In the West, we don't typically think of beans as dessert ingredients, but that's one of the great things about Japan - it makes us take a second look at our own conventions and norms, and hopefully realize that there's more than one way to do things.

I thought that stuff at the end that looks like dog snacks was a joke?! So you actually ate that stuff? I'm not judging here, it's just... wow. It looks out of this world for a snack meant for humans. Like... yeah... a dried squid. What the fuck. Lol I'm so sorry, I mean no offense, but this is so foreign and new to me. I would've never imagined that something like that was a thing. Franz, how about going to a restaurant and buying a big Schnitzel? Or do German restaurants not serve Schnitzel? Because in Austria, you can get it in pretty much any common restaurant. If you should ever come to Vienna or just Austria in general, PLEASE make an episode of Franz's Fine Dining and Travels with Spy! That would be an absolute highlight for me - I used to live there (Vienna) but moved to a different location in Austria.

LordSaber I know that finding a home in Berlin can be/ is REALLY tough so yeah I can definitly see why that can turn out to be a problem

Due to real estate prices in Berlin, moving would place me at an impractically long distance from work. In all honesty, I'm better off where I currently am - I'm personally acquainted with the landlord and he's cutting me a very generous deal on rent. Even still, general costs of living continue increasing (especially during the winter months) and even in my current place of residence, the margin by which I'm breaking even is gradually narrowing.

***** That's very surprising. Do Government jobs not pay well in Germany? In North America, I can't imagine having a job with a federal agency and not being able to pay rent (in a reasonably priced apartment of course), or is rent just really insanely high? If you are struggling, I can imagine lots of others in your country must be too. What happens to the guy who works at the grocery store bagging groceries or stocking shelves? Where does he live if you can barely afford an apartment? Seems like an expensive place to live.

GmanMoose That's the thing... Germany's economy is actually fairly strong right now. The problem is that as in many other lines of work, government jobs pay according to rank, and unless you're ranked fairly high you tend to end up living on a very modest salary. It's true that high-profile positions like congressmen in the United States receive obscene salaries, especially considering that the bulk of what those guys do is sit in cushy chairs all day bickering and not getting anything done (which could be said for many other countries as well, I guess); but I have a feeling that if you ask the men and women doing real civil service like firefighters, police officers and low-ranking FBI agents, they'll have a pretty different story to tell. Another problem is that rent in cities is almost always astronomical unless it's a crime-ridden or poorly-maintained area, and Berlin is no exception. I'm incredibly lucky not to be paying more than I am for rent, utilities and some semblance of daily meals, but even still, things are increasingly tight :/

Hey Spy, for someone wanting to learn Japanese, where is a good starting point if you wanted to teach yourself?

I'm not Franz, but I think I can help. If you want to learn to read Japanese I would recommend the genki textbooks, they're cheap and beginner friendly with plenty of exercises included. The only hurdle is learning hiragana and katakana for the first time. There are semi-interesting programs available on pc or even the DS, or even just pen and paper practice for that and just practice for an hour or two everyday. I taught myself a whole semesters worth of the language before entering college starting with no experience in the language other than anime

Dark Moons I did it the hard way, and more or less unintentionally - simply by playing video games, consuming various forms of Japanese media and conversing with native speakers. There were no proper Japanese language programs offered anywhere near where I grew up, unfortunately.
