Frank Zappa was a very serious musician; he composed this, conducted the band, and played the ripping guitar solo. But he refused to conform to other people's idea of 'serious' music. I'm no Zappa expert, but I believe that's the point of these sorts of absurdist lyrics you'll find all over his catalogue.

    1. "AAAFNRAA" was one of Zappa's mottoes. It stood for "Anything Anytime Anyplace For No Reason At All" - 2a) In "Frank Zappa - In His Own Words" (Omnibus Press, 1993) it says on page 68: "It used to be that I would write specific things about obvious social phenomena that a large number of people could identify with because they had seen it in action. But that's less specific in terms of my own personal experience. You know, I could observe something happen that may or may not have happened to me personally and I could still write about it. These days such weird things have happened to me as a person that I'd rather put some of those down and do it that way. That's why I have songs like 'Penguin In Bondage'. I write about the things thast are part of my personal experience. 'Montana', which is, in part, about a man who dreams of raising dental floss on a ranch in Montana, started out this way: I got up one day, looked at a box of dental floss and said, hmmm. I assumed that nobody had done the same thing and I felt it was my duty as an observer of floss to express my relationship to the package. So I went downstairs and I sat at the typewriter and I wrote a song about it. I've never been to Montana, but I understand there's only 450,000 people in the whole State. It has a lot of things going for it, plenty of space for the production of dental floss...and the idea of travelling along the empty wasteland with a very short horse and a very large tweezer, grabbing the dental floss sprout as it poochhes up from the bush...grabbing it with your tweezers and towing it all the way back to the bunkhouse...would be something good to imagine. Sometimes I show the lyrics to my wife, or after a while I'll get her to read them to me so I can see what the sounds are like, because part of the texts are put together phonetically as well as what the information is supposed to be. I change lyrics all the time. A lot of them get changed by accident. Somebody will read them wrong and it'll sound so funny I'll leave it wrong. [1974]" 2b) kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmyO0LCMcbeWf7w.html

Did you actually hear Ralph Humphries' drum lines? Some of the best ever recorded. The pounding bass line. That boozy trombone. Ruth Underwood's vibes. And you may not know that that is Tina Turner and the Ikettes on background vocals. All in all, one of my favorite Zappa joints. I can see that Vin was 'disturbed' (in a good way) and the song grabbed you by the brain stem right from the start. Sori seemed more amused, but I think Vin got hit by the lightning bolt that most Zappa fans understand. The lyrics are fun, but the music is no joke.

FZ was perhaps the greatest composer of the modern era. His arrangements are complex, his lyricism (largely) silly, but you cannot dismiss the musicianship of his band. He surrounded himself with incredible players. Look for “The Black Page,” so named because there are so many notes on the page, it’s more black than white. The Yellow Shark is an orchestral work that he did near the end of his life. “G-Spot Tornado” is a fun piece too!

Frank Zappa was prolific and is as deep as you could ever want. I think 62 albums released in his lifetime and 10 or 20 more posthumously. He was a regular guess on CNN and other news outlets as well as testifying before congress in the PMRC hearings. Very anti-political correctness as well even back then.

Actually, he didn't freestyle except in live performance. All of the complicated musical parts were written out and extensively rehearsed for many hours a day. "Montana" was a composition and played the same way, except for the guitar solo, each time it was played. His band members were accomplished musicians and had to be in order to play this complex material. Try "Inca Roads" next.

Well, the thing is, Frank would've been perfectly happy writing nothing but complex instrumental music. But music without singing, words and dance-friendly beats won't sell many records. So in order to be played on the radio at all, he had to compromise and write actual songs as well. What's amusing about it is that, because he wasn't interested in the lyrics, he decided to make them ridiculous instead. Not all the time, but very often. And the sad part is that most people have only been exposed to his often silly jokes and sex puns, while his true genius as a composer is mainly only known to his hardcore fans. I think it's only his final Synclavier albums from the late 80s and 90s that show what he would've liked to do all along. And those albums will NEVER be played anywhere.

Of the Ikettes' harmonies, Zappa said: ”It was so difficult, that one part in the middle of the song "Montana", that the three girls rehearsed it for a couple of days. Just that one section. You know the part that goes "I'm pluckin' the ol' dennil floss..."? Right in the middle there. And one of the harmony singers got it first. She came out and sang her part and the other girls had to follow her track. Tina was so pleased that she was able to sing this that she went into the next studio where Ike was working and dragged him into the studio to hear the result of her labor. That, dear friends, was the greatest musical genius of the 20th century. Respect for being some of the few people who've reacted to him on the tube. A slight shame that you chose one of his "joke" songs, because the man had the talent to write anything. And he did. But just the fact that you listened to him at all, is sensational. Just remember that he released over 60 albums in his lifetime, plus another 40 or so posthumously, so this song is hardly representative of what he was about.

@@davebonner6946 I know all this. But even if they managed to rescue and restore everything in the vault, there's a lot in there that's not up to Frank's standard. I mean, the man was an editing genius and would frequently put together albums by splicing together bits and pieces from outtakes, live performances recorded decades apart and meticulously constructed sound effects. Not to mention that his perfection often made him select the very best performances from a tour, and then select the very best SECONDS of each best performance, and then put those best seconds into the NEARLY perfect version fit for album release. Now, as much I as appreciate Joe Travers' work, he is not in a creative position where he can start fiddling with Frank's tapes in a similar way that Frank did. Not unless Frank left behind clear instructions. So the posthumous releases we've seen, have been albums that Frank put together but were never released before, and mostly complete live shows that Joe and Gail deemed good enough, but that Frank would've never released in their entirety. So it's really up to Joe to to decide what's worthy of release, and he can only choose whatever he thinks Frank would've approved of. Which is not a lot. And it's noticeable how much the release schedule has slowed down now, compared with a few years ago. We recently had the Zappa In New York 40th anniversary edition, but whereas before, we could expect a couple of new albums per year, now there's only one per year at best. Or one every few years. If the entire vault was to be released, the number of albums would be in the thousands. But that's never going to happen.

If you want to see something really impressive (and still culturally relevant), you should look up Zappa testifying before the PMRC Senate Hearing on Rock Lyrics back in the 80s...the aged senators were attempting to belittle Zappa based on the "offensive" titles to his song lyrics, and they were clearly unaware of who he was and assumed he was some sort of 'satanic heavy metal' dude - even so, Zappa adopted a Libertarian stance, and said that as an artist, he should be able to articulate any positions he wants and not submitted to govt. censorship by clueless bureaucrats....we need more artists who are willing to be free speech activists in this day and age....

Frank was a composer first, rhythm and blues guitarist, business man (out of necessity), then finally a rock musician last. Good job reacting to it. When he passed away at 52 years old he had over 1200 song titles in his catalog. They are still releasing unheard or unreleased music nearly 30 years after his death. Fun fact, he did dental hygiene public service announcements.

When his buddy from Oingo Boingo (Danny Elfman) came by and saw what Frank was working on, he suggested Frank submit it to this new network called Fox, for a new cartoon. Frank said he could have it, but not to put his name on it, since Frank hates mainstream media, since they all hated him.
