Fun fact: Tina Turner and the Ikettes do the backing vocals on the studio version. Apparently Tina got very excited when she nailed the really quick part. She played a bit of the song for Ike and he said "What is this shit?"

This is pretty funny. I'm 70 years old and have been listening to Zappa since 1966. I've seen and appreciated a lot of your reactions esp. with Lex. You tend to analyze lyrics and take things literally. Zappa was a very serious composer: his music was often extremely difficult and he demanded precision. At the same time, he liked to entertain through absurd ideas, social commentary, sexual humor, etc. His general philosophy was "Anything can happen, at any time, anywhere, and for no particular reason". You might not understand what he's about with a few songs, but that's OK. Better to have heard Zappa and be confused than never to have heard him at all. I hope you can keep going on your path.

I read that someone asked Zappa if this song was about wanting to get away from the hectic stressful life of touring. Zappa replied “It’s a song about dental floss.”

Great googley moogley. Nice to see your reaction Brad to one of my favorite FZ tunes. Can still here my friends from 45 years ago echoing “Get a cup a coffee” when we’d listen to FZ tapes on road trips. Serious composer/ usually non-serious lyricist [though his 1966 song Trouble Every Day ain’t silly and sadly seems to forever be pertinent and on point]. Rock on Brad, rock on 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼

Ha ha! They didn't cut it short, they were going into the next song. Usually they would string almost all of the songs together when they played live. And, yes, you had to be a bad MFer to be in Zappa's band. Band members would come and go over the years. They were all so good and they were always funny people who played great and had a sense of humor on stage.

Silly yes, but the music was top notch. He was a serious musician. He wrote all his music on paper, except the improvisations. He wasn't particularly fond of lyrics, so that was the humor aspect of his music. He wrote pop songs, rock, jazz, doo-wop, modern classical pieces for orchestras, and he was an acomplished guitar player. He was a planet on his own, and didn't let anyone tell him what to do.

Really glad you got a live version most of zappas stuff specifically sounds way better on stage in my opinion. And yea for as silly as it they’re all insane musicians it’s the great duality of all his weird stuff lol and they went into completely other song seamlessly at the end. Probably duprees paradise

BTW: Zappa's lyrics about sex and other naughty things were publicly criticized as inspiring youth to take part in awful things like that. So he asked an interviewer if kids would get cleaner teeth if he made a song about dental floss. Voila.
