I find Frank Gehry's architecture delightfully refreshing and fascinating. I've visited the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and couldn't quit photographing the countless wonderful geometric motifs. Also in Düsseldorf, I keep finding new facets to the extraordinary beauty of the buildings.

In college, one of the first things that I was taught was that architecture is the art of building, not the art of modeling.

It depends on your approach. Are you trying to change people’s perception of the world around them and seek new possibilities? (Post-modern or deconstructionist approach) or are you trying to ‘ask the brick what it wants to be’? (Modernist approach) Also it comes down to are they trying to teach you to be the ideas guy or the execution guy. All approaches are valid, that’s an important point. (As long as the context is correct and the idea is attainable at the correct level of execution.)

Frank Gehry’s buildings should be understood in context both historically and of the built environment. Historically: after modernism the challenge arose to create architecture that is more than a mere machine but that can tell us about ourselves as people. This was marred by teething problems in early post-modernism leading many pastiche edifices of poor taste. Thereafter architects and artists started to literally pull things apart and to re-embrace abstraction- making art and architecture that embraced the new possibilities availed to them while expressing movement and sculpture, the love of form-making. (As alluded to by Patrik Schumacher, this type of building is the Gothic Cathedral of our time, although Patrik’s buildings are more like a Gothic mentality because of the geometric laws which they favour over Gehry’s artist’s hand) Built Context: In his seminal piece, Elements of a City, Kevin Lynch interviewed a large group of people in order to understand what elements constitute a memorable city. There are 5 elements, one of those being a landmark. Gehry is a landmark-architect. He makes the cherry that sits on top of the cake, he is not suggesting that the cake should be made entirely of cherries but simply that the cake comes into focus at the cherry. A single cherry itself would be unremarkable without the cake and while the cake can exist without the cherry, the experience of eating the cake is amplified when one finally bites down on the cherry.

Its always "what I feel..." with these kind non technical artsy kind of people with implicit declaration from them their feeling is better than yours and I am special look at me mindset. Never "what I know..." and I know from experience they are quick to being political and petty. And architects office is certainly that plus very stifling.

The geniuses here are only the engineers who manage to make these junk stand up !!! 😀😀

Architects*, engineers are also great builders and I admire them so much as an architect myself but architecture does not depend on engineering.

Engineers will have nothing impressive to execute if it isn’t for the imagination of the artist.

6:47 it’s simple; 6:55 it was terrible, I wonder who did the concept sketch and who did the execution 😂😂😂

There are architects like this guy Gehry, Eric Owen Moss... who are on extreme end of discipline that tries to make buildings into art objects for their shameless vanity and just to be different. Their work will not be influential. It is noteworthy only to those uneducated and have "look at me!" personalities. Serious serial exhibitionists.

There is an effect called the Bilbao effect. Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in Bilbao was able to save their economy due to its artistic excellence. I don’t think it’s possible to lob Gehry’s work in with the shallow look-at-me work that you may discover over-night flash-cities.
