Frank Emond, Pearl Harbor Survivor (Full Interview)
Born in Rhode Island, Frank Emond joined the U.S. Navy in 1938 in search of new opportunities. In December 1941, Frank was a french horn player in the U.S. Navy band aboard the battleship USS Pennsylvania. He was there on December 7, 1941, witnessing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As the band played morning colors, Frank saw the first bomb drop and explode at a hangar on Ford Island. During and in the aftermath of the attack, he served as a stretcher bearer, carrying casualties to safety to allow for crews to fight the fires. Frank would stay in the Navy for 30 years, and he can still see the images from that morning, which have remained with him.

Bless his heart, you could see the tears welling up in his eyes at the end and knew he was struggling to tell his story. My heart breaks for these veterans and I thank them so much for sharing the memories even though so painful. Future generations need to know of their sacrifices and what freedom cost.

What a generation… hard to fathom how young these men were fighting for their lives. Many lied about their age or were fresh out of high school.

They don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Was just watching one with a man who survived Normandy Dday. I find it so hard to fathom these kids went into a world war directly after high school. One of the guys stole his brothers license and in listed at 15 years old. I wish I had access to some of these old vets. I’d be happy to volunteer my time just talking with them. They are on their way out and they are taking many story’s with them.

when i think of Pearl Harbor, i think of the not so official version of the Tonkin incident^^
I really want to watch this, but I can’t hear him very well because of the noise from the kids in the gym next-door. I’ll see how it goes.

Yes, why didn’t they choose a quiet place to do the interview? I had to stop watching because of the distraction.
Excellent interview, but close caption desperately needs to be revised, e.g. at 2:50 he says MORNING COLORS, not morning call us. Get someone who can do this simple transcription. At 5:28 he said he was on the USS Honolulu; my good friend Gunner's Mate Jim Fuller was also on that ship; I hope they knew each other. At 10:36 and 10:46, it is OGLALA not outlaw or Arg Lala. At 11:19 it is NO DRILL, not know your drill.
