IEC 61499 is the standard for Industry 4.0 when you deal with distributed automation and real time control. IEC 61499 is bringing a new concept for automation engineering and innovation. It is the real point of convergence between the physical and the digital domain by fully adopting the concept of digital twin.
IEC 61499 is the successor of the IEC 61131 standard. It provides the basis for modern automation. IEC 61499 based control technology can be used to program complete plant and equipment, even with several controllers in a distributed control system. Distributed intelligence is thereby enabled. An essential prerequisite for future trends like Industry 4.0, Internet-of-Things and Smart Grids.
Franco Cavadini (Chief Technical Officer, Synesis Consortium) who holds Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering on the subject of artificial intelligence applied to robotic manipulation tasks from Politecnico di Milano is explaining how they are creating a physical demonstrator for Industry 4.0 where all the automation is based on IEC 61499 and the platform from nxtControl during the SPS 2019 international exhibition for industrial automation in Nuremberg.
