Random question but do you guys know about DE’VIA (Deaf View/ Image Art) or if deaf people consider Goya’s work after his hearing loss DE’VIA, and if works like Martin Wong’s are appreciated by the deaf community even if he was never deaf. Love the pod, gracias 🙈

Hi there! Based on the criteria for DE'VIA it seems like Goya's work would not qualify since generally (possibly some exceptions like the one we discuss) there is no direct reference to deaf culture but then again who knows if there was even 'deaf culture' during his day.

Martin Wong - it's hard to find anything about the reception of those ASL works from the deaf /hoh community at the time. Not trying to speak on their behalf but even if they were appreciative of the representation of their culture/language they may have still been disappointed that it was not a DHOH artist who was given that opportunity instead. For example, we follow DHOH creators and the sentiment around teaching/interpreting ASL seems to be that, hearing folks should not even if they are fluent bc employers discriminate and will hire a hearing person over a DHOH even though it is their native language. Again, this is the sentiment we have gathered but not trying to speak for them!
