Frances Tiafoe On Beating Rafa Nadal at The US Open and His Love For The NBA
Спорт
This is a very special episode of The Old Man and The Three podcast with JJ Redick and Tommy Alter. Today we are joined by one of the best tennis players in the world, Frances Tiafoe, and this is one of the coolest conversations we've had on the podcast. Frances talks to us about his incredible backstory and how he got into tennis, beating Rafael Nadal in The US Open and making it all the way to the semifinals. He also discusses the pressures of being a successful American male tennis player and the influence of Venus and Serena Williams. Finally, he talks about his love for The NBA and JJ plays a little game with him where Frances has to compare specific NBA players to specific tennis players. After that, we are joined by OM3 correspondent and Phoenix Suns star, Mikal Bridges. We discuss the Zion 360 Dunk during their game against The New Orleans Pelicans that ignited a "kerfuffle" between players like Chris Paul, Jose Alvarado and Cam Payne. Lastly, we drafted 'People We Most Want To See Cast As James Bond" and if you know anything about Mikal's drafting skills... you know you're in for a treat.

Appreciate you watching this interview. It was really fun talking about w/ Frances about the similarities and differences between our sports. We've have a really awesome interview lined up for next week so subscribe if you haven't. Have a good weekend.
So glad to see tennis getting some love on this platform. Thanks, JJ.
Loved this JJ, Need more tennis people on here and discussion on the mental fortitude the sport needs.
Frances is one of the nicest guy on ATP tour. Every time I see him on tournaments or in the gym he's smiling and joking around with other players or with his team. Always good vibes. Good luck with your career!
Wasn’t expecting a tennis ep but I’ll gladly take it
As a huge fan of the NBA, and a returning fan of tennis, this video is perfect for me.

@@telmolicious Would love to see Nadal lift up the AO cup again, or Carlitos Alcaraz, but it’s unbelievable how Novak is still playing at this stage of his career. I think he will once again defend his goat AO status, and expand his AO titles to 10.

Error in title, he beat Nadal at the US Open not at Wimbledon

@@JJRedick thank you for the amazing work 🥰
Expanding to other sports. I love tennis! This should be great. Love the pod, gentleman!
Impossible to not like this guy. I'm not American but I'm glad you guys have a couple of top men's players now (Fritz the other) after years of not really having any post-Roddick
As a tennis fan it’s dope seeing this collab !
this was such a great episode. TOM&T3 always got great cross-over episodes
I really appreciate you also covering other sports (from time to time)! Basketball's obviously priority number 1 (and rightfully so), but I would really enjoy if you guys would do this a bit more often. Either way great interview! Big fan of Tiafoe!
Loved this episode! Can we also start a drinking game where we take a shot every time JJ mentions "Drop Coverage" during an episode?
This pod was amazing 🔥🔥🔥
For the comparisons, I agree with almost all but Krygios is extremely talented besides his antics unlike Pat Bev. Also I appreciate the distinction Frances made about how Giannis and Rafa are similar in attitude but their games couldn't be further apart.
I'm no expert on US sports but came across this for the Frances and tennis link and JJ appears to be an excellent sports interviewer, any chance you'll get any football (soccer) players on or any other tennis players?
Would love more pods with athletes from different sports that YOU are interested in. Great Pod though :))
no pic of the sweatshirt, jason ur slipping!
I know Tiafoe will probably never go down as an all time great but I never gave tennis a shot until last year that nadal match made me fall in love with the sport.
Super Interview! I'd say Sampras is very much like Duncan.
Tiafoe is awesome! Love tennis as well
How does Henry Cavill go undrafted for the next bond?? 6'1", under 40, absolutely jacked, british, he's everything they're looking for. He would have been my first round pick
I grew up playing tennis and basketball so this is the perfect podcast 😊
Great kid, great interview.
Super interesting podcast even though I’m not a tennis guy!
3AM watching the Wiz? GO to sleep my man LMAO
Am I missing something?? Where are the winners of the drafts announced? Can we add a segment for announcing the winner of drafts somehow?
Francis was excellent. I love it when there's other sport athletes on the show. Wonder if you guys could get Aaron Judge.
i think jokic is more similar to medvedev than djokovic bc of his unorthodox play and crazy iq
Kal is such a cool dude. I know it'll never happen, but he'd be perfect for that 3 spot in Cleveland that they can't seem to figure out.
Hopefully he can make it big and some other too so the sport grows here again. Im'm an NBA junkie but at it's peak there's no sport like tennis. Give me a Djokovic vs Nadal match any day of the week over any NBA playoff matchup.

At least with the way the current NBA is I have to be honest. Not to everybody obvs but to me tennis is currently more exciting than the NBA. I literally started watching tennis because I wanted a sport that gave me intensity that I was no longer getting from the NBA. Not saying the NBA can't be intense. I'm only posting this so maybe the NBA can finally stop having each team take 50 3 pointers a game lol
Just a note on something that bothered me (technical aspect): I think the noise gate was a little too agressive. It was stopping a couple of frequencies, in the start/middle of words, and once you notice that, it does not go away! It was happening on all the 3 mics - less on JJs. 🤣
Guest suggestion: Hubert Jones, Trey Murphy or Larry Lance, please.
Tommy straight flexing for a solid 5-10 mins
It was my first time goin to a tennis match i saw Tiafoe beat Nadal
Had no idea who this guy was until this interview. Had to Google it.
Big Foe ???? Sick
Get Fritz, Isner, or Paul on next!
need that ADONIS CREED hoodie tommy got on
Love the tennis crossover!
Can't believe no-one picked Henry Cavill. I heard he's available now....
JJ is like me as he literally says MJ & LeBron GOAT depending on the day. CoGOAT
I know it’s a human error but when you attempt to diversify your interviews, it’s important you don’t make such a big error in the title, should be US Open, not Wimbledon.
Gotta draft Michael B Jordan as 007
How did no one draft Rege-Jean Page for the next James Bond??
huge missed opportunity not selecting 21 savage to be bond
Chris Hemsworth is an outrageous pick 😅
It would shatter the modicum of pride British people still have to see a non-British Bond
Djokovic is more like LeBron. Has the greatest stats but not the most popular. And even saying this its difficult to describe Djokovic. Everyone knows that home advantage is huge in every sport. That's why every player/team has better record in front of his/their fans than playing as a guest. Now think about Djokovic who played like 90% of all of his matches where crowd was against him. And he still is the best tennis player ever. That's why he won Australian open so many times. And that's why its difficult to comprehend how great he is and how difficult is to achieve what he has achieved so far.

Michael b Jordan!
Tiafoe beat Nadal at tge US Open NOT AT WIMBLEDON
How about Prince Harry for the new Bond?
That was the worst draft ever on this show. I'm honestly disgusted. At least Tommy made me laugh out loud with his Rihanna pick. I would 100% go see that
Ya need to interview an nba ref we need to question them about calls 😂 stick to nba please
JJ let's get this straight. Tennis is NOTHING like golf. Golf isn't even a sport. According to tennis LEGEND Andre Agassi, if you have even a slight chance of playing better after a few drinks, then what you are engaged in is NOT a sport. It's a game. That's golf. If you want to understand what it's like to play tennis, you have to go to combat sports. That said, another great interview, and me too when it comes to being a Frances Tiafoe fan for life :)
