France’s Golden Generation is About to Rule The World..

France’s Golden Generation is About to Rule The World.
Almost 40 years of drought. Between 1967 and 2002, France had only qualified for one basketball FIBA World Cup. From 1964 to 1996, they only managed to qualify for one Olympic Games. The dominating power we are seeing today in French basketball... it was not the norm in the past. But France has had a basketball renaissance like very few nations have achieved in the 21st century. Not only did they have a golden generation that was practically enough to build an entire roster out of NBA players, but the generation that is taking the baton looks even better. After Victor Wembanyama was selected at the very top of the 2023 draft, it looks like they are going to do the same this year. In fact, with Alexandre Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher, two Frenchmen have the chance to be #1 and #2 in the draft in the same year. At this rate, it's not out of the question that in a few years they have the potential to be the best national team in the world... right?
In today's video we look at how France Basketball has emerged as one of the favorites to win it all in the 2024 Olympics. What makes France special is INSEP, our national youth development institution. Its work is really undershadowed imo, and plays a big role in teaching and grooming young talents not just in basketball but in most sports actually. The work they've put over the last 3 decades is amazing.

The key is that the best French players are often outclassed in their age categories and become professionals at a very young age in a league with adult players. As soon as they are 15-16 maximum 17 they train and play with adult professionals, including many former NBA players. They must therefore develop something other than just their athleticism to exist.

@@user-hw2tk7vt1b I was speaking more generally and not only for Basketball. Let's say you have 40 kids, and only 10 stay for the next year. They (French trainers and recruiters) will likely prefer to keep the very tall or very strong guy, even though the kid skills/fundamentals/talent or other attributes are less promising. They will favourite physical attributes rather than talent. For Basketball it is less visible, but we miss some very talented kids based on that sometimes. For instance in football, most clubs and institutions refused to give Griezmann a chance because he was short, even though all agreed his talent and skills was above kids his age. He had to go to Spain to get accepted for development. If he didnt maybe he wouldnt even have had a career in Football, and the guy is probably one of the best to ever wear the French National team Jersey.

One major factor of the US team performances going down is also the rules. Modern NBA rules are a joke. FIBA rules are very close to 90’s/2000’s NBA rules. So when an IS player go to play in FIBA tournament, he plays on hard mode. Not necessarily because of opposition but because those rules are the real deal and they can’t get away from it.

I think I've read that the main issue with US prospects nowadays is due to the downfall of their training programs quality. The kids can do crazy stuff on offense and on 1-on-1, but are lacking on basics (game IQ, defense...). They then get lost when they play against actual grown men, that are actually defending. On the opposite, most of EU prospects grow within professional teams and play with men, not kids. That makes a huge difference

Years ago, when I first heard of Tony Parker, before ever watching him play, I was told he was French. Given that Parker isn't at all a French last name, I found it strange and wondered if my source was mistaken. I was even more confused when I found out he was born in Belgium to an American father and a Dutch mother. However, because he was mostly raised in France, he eventually became a naturalized French citizen. It makes much more sense.

I believe a team which plays with heart, with flag's pride, for the team and the nation, each player overlooking his own kudos to reach a common goal, is way better that one with an MVP who's here to achieve personal career goals, with almost no link to the country, and perhaps lead to create a harmful atmosphere. His choice to play with the US is more legitimate, even if I think he would have been able to do something great towards his real country, Cameroun, and for african basketball in general.

Most of France sports achievements (basketball, football etc etc) were accomplished because of these second generations African immigrants. Look at France’s roaster and took out those that have African origins… pretty much nothing left.
