They fucking hurt when you get hit in the back, and are more maneuverable. You can hit with all the edge, good for grappling in close quarters and can have a smaller arc length to generate force. And axe or mace only hit at one point with more force, so in grapples they can't hit, only lock down people and require a big arc of movement to attack, making grapple fighting even harder.

So a good combo is to have some sword wielders to hold down the enemy and an polearm wielders to attack the person held down. Also this can work vice versa to less effect. The polearm wielders can hold them using the shaft to help lock them up and the sword wielders can hit them, but it doesn't hit as hard. Better for the sword user to hold
