The first underground test, on May 1, 1962, code-named Beryl Sahara , resulted in radioactive vapour escaping through fissure in a rock. Its ill-effects are still felt by the people of Algeria.

Pretty cool visually. Always like watching the underground/underwater tests.
Always bringing us interesting clips from this time in history. Thank you ATC. CC on with auto translate if you're not a French speaker to get a reasonable understanding of the narration.
That music. Mussorgsky’s _Night on Bald Mountain._

@@20thcenturyjuninhothesecon94 _Fantasia_ used Mussorgsky’s _Night On Bald Mountain._ It’s a Philistine tragedy to art, to associate music to films, such as saying Richard Strauss’ _Also Sprach Zarathustra_ is the theme of _2001: A Space Odyssey._ The piece was meant by the composer to convey a scene from F. W. Nietzsche’s (totally crackpot) philosophy book of the same title, where Zarathustra descends from the mountain-where he formulated his world view-at dawn, accompanied by a magical golden lion. Zarathustra earlier encounters other “magical” creatures, such as a dwarf-like spirit that crawls up his back and whispers taunts into his ear, pushing into Nietzsche’s ideas of eternal recurrence. It’s stupid reading, full of antisocial, narcissistic nonsense that the mentally ill Nietzsche tried to peddle as philosophy. Low-brow radicals ate it up, to further push nihilism in his time and beyond. Strauss was obviously impressed by that drivel.

Possibly a watershed event, even.
Always interesting to see non American clips as well on this channel, thanks ATC!
There are other footage showing the mountain leaking the explosion and a guy exclaiming something along the line of "no good, we gotta go"
Nothing says "no leaks here" like duct tape on a vinyl air hose....
And the French cant imagine why Africa doesn't want them ... .Awesome footage

French are nothing but petty thieves. But what the Belgians did in Africa, particularly in the Congo (chopping off the hands of infant girls if their fathers did work hard enough in the plantations) was disgusting.
