FRANCE 24 and the public media landscape: Who we are and where we come from • FRANCE 24 English

There is currently a debate in France about reforming the country’s public TV and radio stations. We wanted to take this occasion to remind you about who we are and where we come from. Created in 2006, FRANCE 24 is part of a bigger entity called France Medias Monde along with its international sister radio station RFI and the arabic-language radio station MCD. Why was the channel launched in the first place? What is our budget? And who watches us? Florence Villeminot and Genie Godula take a look at how FRANCE 24 fits into the media landscape and its driving philosophy.

I'm an Arizonan (that's in America) and I just discovered France 24 English. Along with DW and Al Jazeera, I appreciate news sources outside America. Hopefully the reform will keep France 24 or some equivalent thereof.

Thanks for all your effort. As an asian middle-age woman living in Quebec, the African news you provide is one of the biggest reason I watch your channel, since almost nowhere else we could find them, not even from BBC or DW or Al Jazeera. And also everything about the French culture and arts is attractive.

Even though I like France 24, I've been watching it less since they changed their look and structure earlier this year and dropped You Are Here - I loved that show as it didn't just focus on the big cities, it showed the whole of France's culture and traditions 🙁

French people are often unfairly labeled as "racist" for not learning English or for choosing not to speak it even when they can. It is impressive to observe that some French journalists speak English more fluently than their counterparts at CNN.

As a watcher from the US, I absolutely appreciate France 24 and its coverage. I'm glad to see a news/media outlet that still values journalism and informed opinion/discussion over the for-profit American news media model that dominates US airwaves. Seeing issues in the US covered by a perspective outside of the US political media bubble allows me to be informed without imbibing the native political narrative framing indicative of US broadcasting or granting the corporations pushing it as "news" with my viewership.

Me too. Except I’m aware of what it means to watch state funded left wing media critically and with due skepticism
