François Alu Stunning Bluebird Solo

Фильм және анимация

The Bluebird pas de deux from The Sleeping Beauty is one ballet’s most famous and iconic dances. Although most dance fans are familiar with the segment, the derivation and background of the work are less well known. In this video, I give some historical background for the work, and show one of the best Bluebird variations I have seen, from Paris Opera Ballet’s François Alu. His dancing stands out with great clarity and purpose of movement, making it a preeminent example of this work.
For a comparison, see Mathia Heymann: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWua0KSHcdK-pLg.html

I don't know if it's still available on YT, but I saw PNB's program about the original choreography for this and the grand pdd and was interested to see that the brisees volees originally went to Prince Desire and that his variation as originally choreographed looked like absolute murder! Alu does it the way I've always envisioned it, although the one time I saw RB's Valentine Zucchetti (I'm pretty sure I'm misspelling that), he was excellent. Thank you for including a summary of the fairy tale the pdd comes from because I've never actually known where the story came from. Really enjoyed (as usual) your analysis. I could listen to this stuff for hours!

BRAVO 👏 post Kent! Your steps breakdowns are textbook perfect. Always. As for Alu, his body with his muscle mass alignment and height was made for the famous Role. His non fussy relaxed, airy upper body in particular is quite stunning, a perfect combination of athletic abilities and classic clean academia, a croissant with butter staple of the famous French School. Loved it. The greatest Bluebird I saw live onstage was Fernando BUJONES in the ABT production Baryshnikov staged in the late 80's I think with Makarova as Aurora. Fernando's elevation drew gasps from the sold out Metropolitan Opera House, the lines were exquisite with very comfortable pointed feet at all times. I was surprised when he confided he hated the role, and danced it only a few more times that summer. He danced DESIRÉ also (FABULOUS!!!), with The great CYNTHIA GREGORY as Aurora. Cheers.

Thanks! Never saw Bujones in the role, but it must have been memorable with his great feet and lines.

One thing that makes me particularly upset about the amount of footage cut from 1977's The Turning Point is that I have the album, and there among the numerous stills they included is a shot of Bujones with Starr Danias. He's the one I imagine doing this for most of the reasons Ken gives about Alu. I'm envious that you saw him!

Excellent analysis as always. Thank you so much for your fascinating and thoughtful presentations! I think Alu is the best bluebird I've seen on KZread. Heymann was very good also but didn't have the same elevation and ballon. Was not impressed by Belyakov.
