That ceiling is going to be high enough for a lift for sure. Check out that company that did the lift for Derek on Vice Grip Garage. Maybe you could work something out with them. It's a lift you can move around and very sturdy. Done with it... move it to the side or just leave it where you want to use it. Cool thing. He has a special episode dedicated to getting and assembling the lift. Worth checking out for your shop.

subscribed, planning on a 40x60x12 red iron with a lift and a 10x60 porch. I plan on filming it and throwing it out. Please do a "what I would have done different" segment and a timeline on how long it takes. I have access to a Kubota but am considering renting a two man lift or a boom lift. I will be using 3-4 guys that have never put up a red iron kit either so it will be similar. Stay humble, it's looking great.

I've been in the ironworking and operations safety field (oil and gas) for over 20 years and I've done my fair share of crazy stuff that would make any safety man lose his mind, so a lot of stuff doesn't bother me too much, but as I sit in my office at work watching the beam tied to the basket at full extension and the lack of a feather touch on that front end loader, man I couldn't help but get a little anxiety, I've seen a few bad situations in the industry. Not taking shots at these guys, I've been there and you do what you got to do to get things done, its the American way, but if you have access and the resources to get a man lift, you should. If the weight on that basket reaches a critical point at any time and that beam is tied off like that, that tractor can topple over and those guys don't have a chance of surviving it (I realize there is a backhoe on the machine that acts as a counter balance but with the right weight and the wrong extension, things can go wrong, especially next to a drop off). I'm glad everything went well with the build. Having a good safety culture outside of work (where its forced) is almost always non existent but it can absolutely save lives. Everything's good until it ain't.

2 tricks to installing those big beams. First, do not tighten any of the bolts on the purlins or girders, the slop will allow easier movement and alignment of the bolt holes in the posts to connect the beams. Second, assemble the beams on the ground and lift them as a single piece. You won't need anyone in the basket and with two 10' ladders, one at each post, 2 guys can easily align and bolt the beam in place. That is how I did my 40" cross beams and I put them all up in under an hour with one helper; mine was a 40 x 60 x 14 steel building. Once the beams are in place, check your level, plumb, and square as you tighten all those bolts.

I don't understand why a lot of people do this same mistake when pouring a slab, when pouring a slab that is at a bottom of a grade it should be framed 4 to 6 inches above grade so water doesn't run into what you are using it for like a shop like this and you finish it off with a 5to2 aprin 6 to 8 feet out and no matter how much it rains water won't come into your shop or shed JUST SAYING
