That fade in from black at the beginning has been a real nice intro to the videos. A gentle "Hello."

I like the "floating" aspect. It's subtle, but makes an impact.

First, I love the painting. Kudos to your friend. It's beautiful. Second, the frame is excellent. I like the idea of a thin frame as a way to emphasize the painting but this goes against that and sort of resets the viewers eyes with respect to the background.

My wife is an artist so I make frames pretty often for her paintings. I think you made the right call not "overpowering" painting with the frame. I use a stepped rabbet router bit and the paintings sit in one of the steps (inserted from the front of the frame) and it also gives that floating appearance without the need for shims. I know a lot of guys using playing cards or business cards as shims for these purposes. The frame looks great. So does the painting. Well done and thanks for posting

Yes, it provides a thick buffer with the outside world so that, against a noisy brick backgound, the painting is still sitting alone in a sea of well-crafted but neutral material. So when your eye is over the painting, it has emphasis on the painting itself rather than emphasis on the frame or on the background.

incredible how you can take something so seemingly simple as making a rectangular picture frame and do it in such a way that it's really truly instructive. And of course, those terrific video enhancements such as the diagram over the video.....those as so cool. Thank you for posting this Frank.

Cool idea. If you made the gap between the frame and the painting larger you could use clear acrylic on the corner tabs and the painting would look like it was truly floating.

I make my own frames for my paintings. I make slotted ones traditional ones or ones where the painting is on the front of the frame with molding over it and wooden pegs to keep it in place

Making the two tabs different thicknesses. This is where I would have screwed it up dozens if not hundreds of times because I also would have recessed part of the threads as well as the bolt head, because I have to overbuild EVERYTHIING!!!! Eventually I would have made the blocks adjustable because I can't cut anything accuratey, acurately, accurately...

The first project in I don't know how long you didn't use you cnc. Nice work.

I've seen others (and I've done it myself. I think I learned it from Bourbon Moth) use playing cards to center drawer faces in a face frame; same number of cards wedged into the gaps above, below, left and right. That might have been a good way to center your painting in the frame!

I'm in my 60's and I've done work working stuff all my life from small objects to houses. I found Varathane (brand name) very early on. I think my Dad used it. I'm wondering right now how many gallons I've used. I've done floors with it and bench top things like coffee tables, end tables cabinets etc. I bought it by the gallon.

Supposedly, plain corner bevel joints are even stronger than most other corner joints. It's surprising since iend grain to end grain is considered the weakest glue bond.

So glad you went with a wide profile, the proportions look great. I've been a custom framer for a long time, and I understand that thin float frames are on-trend, but they rarely help emphasize the work. If it's a big statement piece that's displayed in a prominent place, why try and tone it down with a tiny frame?

I built my frames for my Art School graduation and I did something similar. I didn't want to have a thin touching the sides of the pieces, so I created sort of an L-shaped sides the piece was able to sit on that gave "air" around the piece. I think it came out great, but I feel no one really appreciated the effort I put into making them. Most were surprised I made my own. lol

I know you have sponsorships and such, but have you tried deft satin? Personally I don't like the spray paint version, but I'm a big fan of the satin and Matt finish applied by a brush, it has a tendency to self level quite nicely. For whatever reason, the satin and the mat are slightly more expensive. I have found you can use the standard stuff for everything except the top coat and achieve the exact same finish. It's not a huge savings, but it leaves variety on your shelf at least. I'm quite picky, I prefer a French polish, I dislike any finish that removes the feel of the grain entirely. I'm pretty much a permanent convert, two coats with sanding in between is good enough for 90% of projects, the really special 10% I follow up with a friction polish, I've been with deft going on 20 years, it works quite well for me

The painting is on a stretcher. Did you lock it in place by screwing it into the frame? Will that cause problems later?

frank you should have set the picture in a rebate, to let the frame move in the stretcher that has wedges in it , not great idea to screw it down, the canvas could shrink or grow depending on the seasons , check other framing techniques , the frame is held in a rebate with clips screwed into the frame not the stretcher

In 50 years time someone will be trying to hang up the painting using those "bolt tabs" and be very frustrated that it wont hang level no matter how precisely they screw the bolts to their wall.
