Framework Laptop 13 AMD Ryzen 7040U edition: Improving on a winning formula

Ғылым және технология

Framework's 3rd-gen laptop with a 13.5 inch display is available with a choice of 13th-gen Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 7040U series processors, making this the company's first laptop with an AMD option.
But you can also just buy an AMD mainboard and use it to upgrade a previous-gen Framework Laptop 13, because the new laptop has the same modular, repairable design as its predecessors.
In this video we look at the modular nature of the laptop, discuss some performance notes, and take a brief look at Fedora 39 Beta and Windows 11 running on the notebook.
The laptop shown in this video was a review unit loaned to Liliputing by Framework for testing purposes.
For more details on specs, benchmark results, and other information, visit liliputing.com/framework-lapt....
You can buy the Framework Laptop 13 and other Framework products from frame.work/.

I've been running Fedora on my Framework Laptop for more than a year. Here's a tip regarding fractional scaling: Don't use it. Instead, download gnome-tweaks and set the font scaling to 1.6x or so. Looks overall way better, even though some UI elements might scale badly.

Are you on Wayland? Did you enable factor scaling via the gsetting?

Yes, I'm on Wayland. Yes, I tried factor scaling via gsettings, but it just causes some apps that don't fully support it yet to just blur. Which is why I use the workaround I described above.@@Minkiu

@@GeoStreber On X11, it doesn't cause these problems and everything works perfectly well. Remote desktop into the desktop though will be a chore.

Think the only thing I disagree with is "premium price". I got my ram and ssd myself. So for $1155 I got a AMD7660U, 32gb of ram, and a TB of storage. Compared to a M2 air I can't repair or upgrade with only 8gb ram and 250gb storage, I find it cheap.

Definitely agree with this - the Framework mostly tries to compete with Macbooks, as Nirav has mentioned himself and the design points to. The DIY version with parts off of Amazon is relatively inexpensive when compared to Macbooks, Surfaces, XPS, etc..

I get exited everytime you post because I hope there will be another good 10 inch laptop. I guess I will still end up buying a Framework down the line anyway. Lets hope there are more small form-factor laptops in the future. Cheers!

Honestly, I just got a surface go for this. It's not ideal but definitely the smallest good laptop out there right now (with the type cover) ...

Yeah, the landscape is pretty sparse right now. Off the top of my head, there's the new Chuwi MiniBook X, which is inexpensive, but not very powerful, and the One Netbook 5, which has a much better processor, but sells for $1,169.

Ever since Framework launched, I've said the moment they put out an option for desktop-replacement performant components (AKA: 7945HX + 7900m) I'd throw down. I stand by that, even though I know it probably won't be till 2025/6 if it ever happens because my needs mean I am not the mainstream market.

Fully agree. But as it stands, for the vast majority of use cases, the framework 16 with an eGPU would probably be able to replace a desktop just fine already.

@@raute2687 Unfortunately, not for my use case, and I also don't want to use an egpu, I have enough crap to lug through airports already, I literally can't have 'just one more thing'.

I'm a bit late, but I run mine with Linux Mint and the auto-cpufreq open source package and it stays quite cool except under heavy load. On default settings it will run fairly hot and loud.

AMD version is currently under pre-order, but it is essentially the same hardware all along. The only difference is the new GPU and bigger battery, that's it.
