I think that it all looks fine. Make sure that the frames are secure on a true flat surface when you use the transfer punch and make sure that it's a nice close fit and perpendicular before you whack it. One other small point: when tapping in the lathe I always locate the rear of the tap wrench with a centre in the tailstock. I don't think that it would matter in this instance, but I feel it's good practice and I try to maintain good habits. Best wishes.

Thank you George. That eclipse tapping wrench holds the taps at an angle so I figured it was best done by hand!

Great job. If you can get the frames on the mill use that’s as a surface plate for the moment to check they are sitting flat. If you want to sanity check things then clock the frames parallel to the bed and then run a clock across each axlebox face that will soon tell you if they are within a few thou. I would get your front buffer beam in after the bogie bolster then the whole front end is fixed together.

So my pet theory at the moment is that the mounting holes are all square, as are the horns - but the cosmetic edge of the frames are cut slightly different to each other, being hand cut and filed. If I put a 123 block under the spacer (i.e. using the holes as datum) then there is no rock using my lathe bed as surface plate. I will test a few other permutations but I think we're good. Annoyingly, beams are super-tight fits on the chassis so I'll need to open them out too. I will def. run a clock and/or skim the horns as neccesary. How much float do I want in the axleboxes longitundinally? I would assume very little/none compared to laterally?

👍👍👍👍 a piece of kitchen worktop is reasonabley flat, if it won't fit on your mill table, then you can check square, flat, twist, & rocking, just to belt and brace, double check, then triple check and then if your happy, check again!, any small error will have a knock on effect when you come to fit everything else. I'm know expert but just from my experience building mine. regards Kev

My frame sides got banged in the post when I bought them so they are VERY SLIGHTLY wavy -any ideas on how to fix that?

@@williamsworkshopuk take all the attachments off to get you back to flat plates, find a very thick robust piece of flatish timber to lay the plates on one at a time,( to absorb the shock,) on the floor, then find the high spots and give the high point a good whelt with a heavy duty hide mallet, keep doing this untill a straight edge is within reasonable flatness. some trial and error involved, but that's what i did, because the plate i used was black hot rolled steel . 😉😉👍👍

@@MrFactotum the horns are rivetted in but the bends are quite a ways away from them, so fingers crosed this will work!

We are catching up with videos so I expect you have moved on. It looks good and I noticed some good suggestions from others in the comments. We have never used our lathe steady's either.

Yep looks like we're in a good place now, though of course who knows with these things? The Lathe Steady was a gift in this scenario, but I think I need to learn how to use it properly before I make too definite a judgement on it!

Can't see anything you have overlooked. Seems reasonable. I would just double check with a square if you could though.
