Frame Analysis - FEA using ANSYS - Lesson 4

Ғылым және технология

This video illustrates how to conduct a two-dimensional beam/frame analysis using Static Structural analysis.
Learning objectives:
1. Create beam geometry in SpaceClaim.
2. Assign a standard AISC steel section from the library and re-orient the section for strong-axis bending.
3. Define end releases and boundary conditions for frames.
4. Generate shear and bending moment diagrams for columns and beams.

    Hello Professor and thanks a lot for your videos! At the minute 5:27 (in "Detail of Beam") I can see the option " Cross section ( for Solver)". Unfortunatelly I can't see the same option in my beam detail window. Can you please help me understanding why ? (SW version - 2021 R2) Thanks in advance!

    Hi, can I apply an external moment at the internal hinge?? And if so how that moment is shared between the two intersectiing beams??

    Hello Prof. H, I saw your last video for the truss. You change your elements to links in order to treat the problem as a truss instead of the frame. However, I have a question, can I do the same problem by treating it as a frame and applying for an end release at the joints. What I found is, end release is giving some errors while doing that

    I'd be careful with using just end releases to model a truss with frame (i.e., beam) elements. It's possible and even likely that you could "under-constrain" the model, in which case it will give you a error that you have rigid body motion. Don't get me wrong - it should work in theory, but often in practice something weird and unexpected happens. Without more detail on exactly what you did with your model, I can't say for certain exactly what went wrong. However, best practice is to just use the link/truss element for trusses (and, besides, it's more computationally efficient than beam elements anyway).

    If we want to calculate the deflection in a steel hollow goal post( two vertical pipe and a horizontal pipe joined as one part)With fixed end of the vertical pipe and if i apply a point load on the horizontal post,will it be considered as a simply supported beam or a frame?

    Hi Ashik, A simply-supported beam usually refers to the rather specific case of a beam supported by a pin and a roller. Your goal post sounds more like a cantilever structure (fixed at one end). Regardless, as far as ANSYS is concerned, all these structures are just models of beam elements. The civil engineering convention is that a bunch of beam elements connected is called a frame. But you can absolutely model goal posts using the techniques shown in this video.

    Great video! Do you know, why it isn't possible to use the CP command for coupling DOFs? Your method works but is unfortunately a bit circuitous. :(

    I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that, but I can take a guess. I agree, the CP command should in theory work. However, once you use the Share Coincident Topology function (the "Share" button in SpaceClaim), I believe the nodes are automatically merged; i.e., not just coupled, but converted into a single node. The CP command generally relies on coupling one node to another, so it may not work in this case when the nodes have been merged into one. That's why we have to release degrees of freedom in ANSYS Mechanical (beam end releases) rather than couple degrees of freedom.

    In previous video you changed the number of mesh elements to 1 for each truss member. Here for frame, that was not the case. Could you please explain as to why ?

  • @StructuresProfH

    @StructuresProfH

    Truss elements can only carry axial load, so in effect they behave as though they are always pinned at the two ends. If you mesh a truss with multiple element in a single structural member, it would be like adding a bunch of hinges along the length of the member - you would immediately see convergence issues, and it would not give you the correct answer. With frames, the "beam" elements can carry internal shears and moments as well as axial forces. Hinges and other releases must be modeled explicitly with end releases. Because these internal forces will change along the length of the structural member, you need to have multiple elements to accurately model that behavior.

    Thankyou so much sir for making this video 🙏🙏. Sir my question is, if we are making rigid connection at beam to column joint node it self act as the rigid element or we can use any other elements. And one more question sir, how to make semi rigid connection using rotational spring at the beam to column joint..plz reply sir.. 🙏🙏🙏

  • @StructuresProfH

    @StructuresProfH

    2 жыл бұрын

    Naresh, The rigid connection option that I showed here does not make any kind of rigid element (or any new elements at all). It simply constrains the translational and rotational degrees of freedom for the two or more flexible beam elements that meet at a point. If you'd like to create a rotational spring, check out this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqudtJSgqauZdaQ.html
