Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

    It is SUCH mom life! So they/I sent a parakeet over the rainbow bridge a few years ago because it was their job to feed the birds, and they never put more birdseed in the little tray thing - which was totally my fault because I forgot to tell them that the birds eat the seeds and leave the shells, so it might look like their dish is full, but it’s not. Those things were dead within the first two days of having them. So as a result, I check on the other pets they’ve forgotten about 13 times a day. 😂

    I put a massive amount of Lemongrass EO in my 5lb loaf (ratio based on oils) ... and after un-molding it was off-putting because I don't like overpowering scents. Today marks 6 weeks of "curing" and the scent is absolutely perfect. It's strong enough to smell like Lemongrass, but light enough to keep in the restroom without it smelling like a Lemongrass factory. Haha

    Ok. Here goes. I'm doing a FO/EO blend. Patchouli FO and Orange 10 Fold EO. The company I got the FO from has the IFRA usage rate at 2.6%. The orange is 3%. I want to make a 50/50 blend. How would I go about doing that? It would be simpler to use both EO'S, but this is something I have already, so was wondering if I could get some help figuring it out. Thank you so much! • @MrsSoapAndClay

    @MrsSoapAndClay

    I would never put a max usage rate that high in any soap; those max usage rates are safety ratings, not what the soap will tolerate. 30% of any scent or a blend in a soap could very well lead to leaky bars. Try between 5-10% of the oil weight, splitting 50/25/25 amongst the three. Have fun!

    I don’t know why people try to overcomplicate things. Saponification is a brutal process, and much gets lost as a result. Melt and pour requires less scent because it’s already been through the change. It’s usually best to trust your best instincts in the soaping world - you’ll find that you’re right most of the time. Now for the why behind it all? I’m happy to help make that make sense! 😂❤️

Blending oils( fragrant or eo) eg cinnamon eo is .5 % and blend with 2 other eos, is the total amount of oils at .5% for total oul weight or .5% cinnamon plus 2% lavender plus 3% rose = 5.5% eos for total oil weight please? NOTE: I just pulled %s and names out of my head for example. Thank you.

    @@MrsSoapAndClay ... I disagree about the stupid question. There is a stupid question. The ONE you don't ask. - a professor, from what feels like a million years ago, explained that the process of learning, in a classroom is SUPPOSED to be "interactive" - in That, teachers give information, and examples in such a way that is designed for students to actually ask questions. But no one does because they are too afraid of asking a dumb question, or looking stupid. - I was never afraid of that. No matter what grade I was in, By the 2nd week of school every teacher saying does anyone have any questions? Or asking the class does anyone know - fill in the blank - would then say "Does anyone ELSE - have, know - fill in the blank. I might have a lot to say, and I might know more about a lot than most, but I also read everything I have access to. Because I'm not a Know it all, I just WANT TO know it all, everything about everything. How do you open your mind? Open a book 📚. 🤗❤️😁💜😎 Everything is about perspective. And while I love, love love cinnamon. It's considered a "hot" EO. - it's spicy in flavor. But in terms of there's a difference in essential oils families. Peppermint and cinnamon are hot because they, for lack of a better option, being heat to the skin. Use peppermint oil in a soap and use it for southern areas and there's going to be exclamations that are above rated PG-13. - hot. Hot. hot. 🥵🔥 So please use caution when formulating EO. - because if I'm not mistaken, you're going to have to calculate EACH INDIVIDUAL OIL as far it's requirement for Use plus it's ratios within the limits of the total Use, Used. - Oh My the maths. - I'm not a math geek. I need more math geeks for friends. Yes I just want to use you for your mind 🧠🧠🧠 LoL.

    @@emerencespringer I actually love using peppermint EO and menthol crystals in soap. I'm careful about the usage rates so that it's never burning or painful in its sensation but the tingling is enjoyable. Now. I'm a super smart granny. Like I said I read about quantum physics for fun because I find the subject fascinating. But for the LOVE of chuck and my sanity, I don't do math. My Achilles... And that's what giant computer brains 🧠, calculators and spreadsheets are for. I can read a map, but algebra is not going to happen. So help me please understand what the math is for for the formulas for adding FO and EO. - as in school when you're told to show your work, how do I get the answer...⁉️ You completely Lost me with total weight of Oils but not for the water. And I understand that soap calc doesn't give measurements for EO-FO, and there's other websites for calculating specifically for those. But my 🧠 wants to know the proper procedure, process, how to do it just in case. Because I'm just a NERD... - soap making is basically science and chemistry, right...? Liquid becomes solid, and all that jazzy stuff you do... My hubbster has said for years me, just making coffee is a science project. But it's the best cup of coffee you will ever know... Because guess what, cooking, also science and chemistry.. thanks in advance. ❤️💗💜

    Okay. Numbers! I have a 4.5LB tall & skinny mold from Nurture Soap. So my current soap recipe is designed for this mold. To fill it I use EXACTLY 48 ounces of oils, 15.28 ounces of water, and 6.55 ounces of lye. Plus 3 ounces of fragrance (roughly). At that rate 3 ounces of fragrance is 6.25% of my OILS (math: 3 ounces divided by 48 ounces of oils). But if I did the math based on total weight of oils + water + lye, 3 ounces would be only 4.29% (48 + 15.28 + 6.55 = 69.83 then 3 ounces divided by 69.83 ounces is 4.29%). What Mrs S&C is saying is that you need to calculate it ONLY based on the oils weight because, roughly speaking, after you cure out a soap the water weight (15.28 ounces in my case) will evaporate out. Meaning if you ARE actually using a fragrance that is only skin safe up to 5% in any soap product, basing it on oil weight tells me my 3 ounces is unsafe but on the combined total weight I would think it IS safe... and then we'd be unsafe after cure because the weight changed! One could, nominally, consider mathing by oils + lye since the saponification reaction doesn't, to my knowledge, create any byproducts that would evaporate out. In which case 3 ounces of fragrance would be 5.49% (3 ounces divided by 54.55 ounces [48 ounces of oils + 6.55 ounces of lye]) and would still be too high for something at a safe usage rate of 5%. But that takes more math since you have to add the oils and the lye first, without the additional water and other additives.

  • @iKit306

    @iKit306

    2 жыл бұрын

    So if we start at my recipe minus the fragrance, what we want to do to find the max rate of fragrance (either EO or FO) to use is a simply mathematical calculation: 48 ounces times 0.05 = 2.4 ounces. This is the rough max if I want to do 5% fragrance in my soap. Of course safety is, as Mrs S&C said, dependent entirely on my fragrance. Cinnamon and black pepper for example would be MUUUUUUCH lower. Some FOs might be only IFRA safe up to 1% (which as she said... why bother?). In which case of those 2.4 ounces no more than 0.48 can be the fragrance that is only safe up to 1%. The remaining 1.92 ounces of fragrance needs to be something else.
