FPV Mold Making for Metal Casting
I just intended this to be a test of the GoPro for future videos, but I thought it turned out pretty cool. At the same time, I see how it could be kind of confusing if you don't know what's going on here, since it's a middle step in a long process.
I started the process with a misshapen Styrofoam head that I wanted to cast in aluminum. Using resin sand, which I can form around the object before it hardens, I created a 3-part mold for the outside of the head. However I wanted the sculpture to be hollow so it wouldn't be a massive chunk of solid aluminum.
What you see in this video is me mixing resin sand (sand + catalyst + resin) and then packing it into the mold. I have lined the inside with carpet foam, so that when this final part of the mold is hardened, I can remove the foam and there will be a gap all the way around, this will be the area filled with aluminum.
Sorry if this is difficult to understand, but to be honest, I didn't really understand it either until I started to actually do the process myself.
I'll try to make videos in the future more thoroughly documenting this process, from beginning to end.

Nice mess that you made there, LOL. Cool video Peter! Mold-making and casting are such neat processes.

Also glad to hear that you are wearing a respirator!

Considering there is a resin in this sand mixture, can it be broken up and re-used for another mould as with oil sand?

Also next time, consider wearing thin gloves to protect your skin from the unreacted resin and hardener. One can develop exzema-like skin sensitivities through exposure.
As someone who is 5'2", being as tall as Peter is EXHILARATING. He could film anything at this height and I'd love it, this is really cool though

i agree, and I'm also 5'2. its weird to see everything to far down on the ground instead of closer to my eye level
12 minutes into the video and I have never been as mesmerized as I am right now. And now I am also envious.
Peter, thank you so much for sharing this on your channel, can't wait to see the final product ❤️
ahaha peter frantically sweeping up the sand off the floor, "I need this!"
Always interesting to look at something that is completely unclear what you are looking at. Thanks Peter Greetings from Peter.
As a person trying to grow their tiny youtube channel without pandering or getting stuck in a rut, it's a huge inspiration to me to see you constantly branching out into new things and being your genuine self. I am always excited to see a new video from you!! Thank you!
Casting is a wonderful process. Very satisfying.
Loved this, looking forward to seeing more!!
this is really cool. I'd be down for more of this in the future!
Thanks for this! Can't wait to see whats next.
Really interesting vid. Looking forward to seeing the next steps.
Those classes/courses are so cool, great decision opting for them!
the resin mixing into the sand reminded me of butter mixing into graham cracker crumbs when I'm making the crust for my cheesecake
This is actually really cool and interesting 👍🏾💙
Hello Mr peter always great to see a vid
Thanks for the video drop
This is extremely cool. I've never seen anything like it. I look forward to learning more about what you're doing here and how the finished sculpture turned out
Very cool, nice to see you’re branching out in your art
Love you peter
Please let us know how your project continues. Its so interesting. ❤
Nice!
turning into codyslab but with art
I can't sleep, what shall I watch? I know! Peter Draws, because his voice is always so relaxing to me. 🤗 This video: 🤐 (Still a cool video though, even though wheezy Darth Vader wasn't particularly lulling me to sleep.😅)
Enjoyed the break from the talking. I like that nobody bothers you while you're working, but somebody is there to help. I think the confusing thing is it sounds like a mold is being made of a mold...but when you describe the thing about the foam and the gap, then removing the foam so that only the sandy mold remains and the alumin is poured into the recess, that makes sense. Sort of. Is the foam head inside the box? I understand the venting and tamping. I'm curious about the wooden box or structure around the work area. Also, I just realized I forgot to buy laundry detergent. Again.
Classic Peter voice over please 🙌
"where's all my laundry detergent?" - mom Just kidding ☺️
neat
Hullo Peter, I believe that as a test for your go pro camera this is a rousing success! Content wise I wish you had spoken rather than put up screen texts. Kinda hard to read on a smaller screen. I hope your plan is to gather up a complete project to share with us, that was my impression of this video. I have done sand casting in the past and I am wondering just how similar it is? Thank you for sharing this lil grab from your head project. I look forward to watching more videos and seeing how you are getting along. Be safe Peter.
Great vid! But make sure to wear gloves (contaminants can enter via skin), and please wear your respirator the entire process. Wanna keep you healthy Peter! =)
Metal.
I also was thinking about how you sounded like darth vadar lmao
messy play!

I don't like the FPV. Too shaky and hard to see things. It gave me a mild headache. I was thinking that preset structures that could be used to attach a camera to. With a steel plate on the structure, and a magnet on the camera, that you can have reasonably quick mobility (no not perfect) and quickly move the camera view. Or maybe also a mount on the head that the magnet can stick too when moving is desirable. Just that when there is no location movement, there should be no camera movement.
Peter i miss your voice :(
Ok, but no breathing in the next one, alright?! That's just creepy! . . ...ahh-hahaa! Djust djoking! Just felt like pretending I was one of these young people they got these days who think anything to do with other people's bodily functions, natural processes, etc, is an assault on their sensibilities... : [)
