FoxBody Mustang Weird Speedometer Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My Fox Body Mustang's speedometer would stop working when it got hot. I COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT. I replaced EVERYTHING: speedometer cable, sensor, even the speedometer itself. It still would stop working when it got hot. Then I found out the speedometer gear was too loose on the speed sensor itself, and when the gear (aftermarket) got hot, the plastic would expand and stop working. If your speedometer works intermittently, this might be your problem.

Update: I bought a Tremec OEM gear (not a no-name plastic gear from LMR or whomever) and my speedomter works perfectly.

I think I have the same problem. The speedo and odomoter work okay initially, and then as it starts warming up it starts jumping all around. Trying to figure out the speedo gear to purchase.. it lists different speedos from tremec with a different amount of teeth. I don't know which one to get. I've got a 1994 mustang gt automatic transmission.

Check the color of the gear inside the transmission. Remove the speedo cable/sensor from the transmission and look inside to see what color it is inside the trans.

Let me ask you something... I have a issue with my car (91 Mustang) that i haven't been able to figure out and i have wondered if maybe this sensor is bad,its a AOD car. If you ever have been on a commercial flight, when you land and they turn the reversers on, thats what it feels like when coming to a stop, its like it doesn't wanta go into first and at the risk of sounding combative, lol, its not the transmission, thing shifts like silk and i have always taken super good care of it, many years ago it was doing that and one day it just went away and now its back,i think it has something to do with the idle so i was thinking maybe it could be this sensor? any opinions?

That's really interesting. Is your transmission downshifting? I wonder if your kick down cable is not adjusted properly.

Thank you for your reply, yeah you know i think it could be the TV cable, those cables are real finicky,i actually adjusted mine with the "no slack no tension "that some Ford techs recommend but i think what has happened is over the years and several different intakes and spacers that adjustment might have gone south. Case in point,i used to have a egr eliminator spacer that i actually made out of phenolic,i drilled and tapped 2 holes for the throttle bracket and i made it for 65 mm and i used it for years, about a year ago i rebuilt my engine and when i put everything together the car started "wondering" on overdrive and i told myself, " well ,new engine, other things are going to break down" thats what most people believe so i blamed it on that and just started driving it in 'D" , i dont do much highway driving so i figured i could drive it in D until i got my tranny rebuilt even though it shifted perfectly. While browsing on eBay i saw a auction for a really nice polished aluminum EGR eliminator bracket so i bought it and installed it,i mainly did it for looks because my old homemade spacer looked kinda rough, because this new spacer was wider than my old phenolic i had to adjust the TV cable so it would reach the throttle body,a very very minute adjustment, after i did that overdrive started working again like a dream, blew me away, lol, something that small was keeping my overdrive from working properly. soooo,i think you are right, maybe that TV cable just needs a minor touch,i know you asked me if it downshifts,it does but it bogs down and it makes the engine rev up, not too high mind you but its annoying and thats what i want to fix,il just play with the cable in very very little increments and see if that does anything, sorry for the long post, just wanted to explain everything in detail and it might help someone out some day

Original speedometer cable was replaced do to a whining noise coming from the gauge cluster while the vehicle would be in motion, mileage was still reading. I've replaced the cable and fixed the whining noise, but now the mileage ain't reading. Replaced the cable twice now and can't figure out the issue. Also changed the gear cap currently running a 17th tooth

@@dannyd4922 Weird. On later models, the gears that turn the odometer would get brittle and break. That's not really a thing on older ones, though. I'd suggest getting a salvage cluster.

@@dannyd4922 No, my speedometer AND odometer didn't work. If your speedometer works correctly (reads speed), but your odometer isn't turning, that's something internal to the speedometer/odometer.

Oil the square shaft so epoxy won't stick. Then a small dab of epoxy in the gear hole. Presto.

There is an equation out there (American Muscle comes to mind)...as to what speedo gear you need to use and it's based on your tire size and the gear ratio in the car. Not sure if this helps your problem or not...just throwing that out there.

Yes, LMR has one. My issue was not calibration, but it just stopped working because the gear would expand and slip on the shaft. Here's that calculator for reference, though: lmr.com/products/Mustang-Speedometer-Gear-Calculator
