My question is how could they possibly get away with airing a 4:3 print on a HD channel?

They probably had an old master from 20th Television and didn't ask the 20th Television people "can we have a new TV print optimized for HD?", which explains BET in 2018 airing the unusual 4:3 full screen version of Just Wright. Could have been based on an old premium TV network print for HBO, Starz, Showtime, etc.

Fox Movie Channel/FXM Retro? Well, yeah that's also familiar, same year as BET's Just Wright airing, same 20th Century Fox, same 20th Television, but the difference could be that the '90s video release/Fox Movie Channel/FXM Retro cut of Tales of Manhattan probably didn't have an HD remaster ready for TV, where as with Just Wright, Fox probably already had some HD prints ready for TV that may be in a 16:9 pan n' scan full screen format, as letterboxed versions typically don't show up on TV unless it's TCM, except for when TCM aired The Way We Were and Sony gave Turner the 16:9 full screen version that may have shown up on and was probably made for the premium TV channels.

And Just Wright didn't have a 4:3 or 16:9 full screen version with the US DVD release, which makes sense since September 14, 2010 (two years before the Gravity Falls episode "Fight Fighters", fitting for a Fox Searchlight title) was well into the Blu-ray era that the vast majority of US Hollywood distributors didn't need to do this "full screen" trend on home video for newer movies.
