I edc a fox 599 as a paramedic. I've cut clothing without cutting the patient, I've cut seat belts, straps, you Name it. At home I've cut carpet, drywall, rubber mats, rope, and used the tip for fine slicing. You have to know how to handle a karambit. Understand its strength and weakness and accept it. Karambits are very functional. Practice.

I get that there are things a karambit can’t do, but I’d definitely say they are way more useful than most people give credit for. I carry a karambit every day, and I have not found a task they didn’t work wonderfully for. So, for me, they work great as an every day carry tool.

Yes and I’ve bought other Karambits but the Fox is the thinnest and lightest while others are just so heavy and thick that you can definitely feel the weight difference in your pocket. It’s simply the best Karambit made out there. Even the Emerson karambit is thicker and heavier.

This knife is my every day, I work general maintenance for a complex. I do drywall and sheetrock repair, wiring, and electrical. I even tile pools. This knife is a toy, but it can do the job. I got mine from thrown out amazon package. I would pay the price for it. Today, used it for cutting drywall and grab sheets while my other hand was busy.

I love these and have several of them, you can also get the trainer version for safe practice. The trainer is also very effective as a none lethal defensive carry item but probably only after you have trained properly with pressure points and locking techniques. BUT BE WARNED, YOU WILL NICK YOURSELF SEVERAL TIME WITH THESE UNTIL FULLY TRAINED......

I own the exact karambit from fox knives, I have trained numerous martial arts in my day and the beauty of a karambit is if you know how to throw a punch then you know how to use a karambit in a basic manner. A strait blade knife, there are alot of counter intuitive hold to make the knife work defensively and offensively. In other words, strait blade or curved blade for an individual that has trained how to fight with hands, then karambit wins due to simplicity of use.

I’ve edc the Fox Karambit 479 for years and during the whole pandemic I use the Emerson wave to hook onto door handles with the blade closed to open doors as not to touch the handle bare handed. The wave hook opening is wide enough to do this but you have to hold the blade closed with the knife in you palm using your fingers holding it closed. It works great for opening packages and boxes. I use it to break down boxes flat to put into the recycle bin. Now that I got my ccw permit it’s my secondary defense weapon if someone tries to go for my pistol.

It is a Fox 479 karambit, I also have one in G10 handle and it's awesome. From my understanding the design is for self defense but also can be use for EDC utility as well. In my country in Asia, is suppose to be use for farmers in agriculture ways, the shape makes easier for them to work in the field and it's also can be use in self defense manner

Karambits were developed because of their usefulness. Lots of professionals use similar blade designs every single day at work, from master electricians to a warehouse worker who has to collapse a ton of cardboard boxes. Big issue with karambit folders is that you can't have both edges sharpened, so cutting food is a bit of a pain...but if you want to make a perfect slice of fruit, a karambit is great for it! But...knives are like credit cards, it's best to have at least two with you at any time, lol.

This particular karambit I can say is high quality, holds an edge beautifully, fun to play with and does great with practical work. But stop buying knives for solely self defense, for the price of four of these you can buy a Glock that's helluva lot better for self defense than a damn 3in blade

It’s not practical for you and that’s perfectly fine. I can’t stand most fixblades for normal edc. We each got our own thing. I have very little karambit training after getting one just to understand how they’re meant to be used. But I don’t have the time to dedicate to training for it. I found it to be more practical to use it in a normal punch or to even pivot it in a mid punch to get that extra bit of reach on the blade. The colonel blade seemed to address that mindset of not needing to know how to fight with a knife but being able to just throw a normal jab. Regiment blade same thing. Fun fact. The owner of regiment blade was the original owner of the colonel blade but after a shady employee and John Lovell at wps he essentially lost full right to the colonel blade. Also for using it for normal cutting I guess I just got used to opening it differently to cut boxes open n what not

With a karambit, there are other uses than slashing and cutting, you can use the back of the blade, with your wrist angle to control an opponent's arm or wrist , also can be used on pressure points on the neck of your opponent, once you have them under control , then you use the other attributes of the weapon, to end the threat , great knife knife

Really it’s just remembering to either pull it by the ring with a forward twist or holding it closed by the back of the blade if you don’t immediately need it open. If it catches and half opens, that tip, from experience, is stupid sharp. Convinced me to look into Bastinelli knives since they’re also made from Fox Steel. Also got an Emerson Sheepdog for work. The wave is super useful. But it takes some blade awareness and practice.

The average guy will carry a fixed or folding straight edge, and use it as a utility knife, while a Karambit will require some practice and falls in line as a quicker means of use in self defense. The angle of the blade is advantageous in an emergency if needed to use to cut nylon (seat belt) rather than a straight edge or cut away clothing while at the same time lifting it. It all depends on your specific need for usage.

I always liked the hawkbill growing up we had one around and when I used it to cut rope it was always satisfying the way the curve would catch the rope and slice it efficiently. The other day I was preparing some chicken for Tandori BBQ and I thought to myself why not so I took out some Saran wrap folded over three layers put it on the chicken took out my knife collection and started experimenting seeing how my knives would slash. I was surprised that my Pacific Salt 2 PE, Emerson spearpoint, Spyderco Barong etc barely made an impression. I've sharpened all of those decently on a Spyderco sharpmaker. Although they're not razor-sharp but they should be sharp enough to do the job that is cut through clothing and tendons if called upon. However my Cold Steel XL drop point had the mass and blade geometry to make a real cut. What really surprised me was my Perrin Le fruit and Perrin shorty really did the job especially the hawkbill on the former despite having a 1in cutting surface and being a lowly hideout blade. I trained under Martial Blades Concepts and had a long conversation with Michael Janich about karambits. He was very negative so I went with Wharncliffes for some time. However after my chicken cut test I have a renewed interest in the hawkbill. Also I like the ring for less lethal. I've also studied a bit under Ed Calderon and I like the sneakiness and scaled brutality of his approach. Finally going back to my childhood and woodcraft agricultural experience I do appreciate the utility of the hawk bill especially when it comes to processing fruits and vegetables even meat and trimming plants et cetera.

Being a cheap bastard who doesn’t look for trouble or deal with it regularly on the job, I bought a faux Fox on eBay for $15 back in the day ($20 now). Then several others. Of the five I’ve bought, two had issues (one poorly ground point, one liner lock issue, both currently letter openers). The other three are (after extensive sharpening) close to as functional as a real Fox ($130 at the time, some obvious reverse engineering going on). If I were an operator or ninja I would want a Fox. A faux is my edc. I love the less-lethal applications (ring as a knuckle duster, butt end for hammerfists, I don’t picture myself using it as a impact flail but it is an option). Opened I consider it a less-lethal weapon; it’s unlikely to cause fatal injury without training and intent. It offers awesome options for control and compliance though. Causing a few hundred stitches worth of (relatively superficial) cuts in a couple seconds will make almost anyone consider their life choices. Many US jurisdictions smile upon this design as considered a non-weapon pocket knife, with its short single-edged blade and less-than-ideal design for causing broad deep stabbing injuries. Since it’s not considered primarily as a weapon, there are fewer issues regarding concealment. It’s a wonderfully safe and practical utility cutting implement that doubles as an incredibly effective less-lethal weapon. I don’t devote endless time to practice. Its use flows seamlessly into normal striking and grappling patterns. Of course I’m not a troublemaker, or operative, or ninja, just a guy reasonably skilled in striking and grappling with a good understanding of the applications of a folding karambit. It suits me great for edc.

You're right, it's not for edc. Unless you're stabbing something or someone everyday. However, I own one for collecting purposes only.
