My 160-gallon fish-only tank (200 gal total system) is 4 years old. All the fish started out at around 1.5 inches and have been in there since the beginning. It's been enjoyable watching them grow and change to their adult forms. My clown triggerfish is now 9 inches long. The other specimens are a sailfin tang, copperband butterflyfish, racoon butterfly, Picasso trigger, Imperator angelfish, purple tang, a blue streak cleaner wrasse, and a few percula clowns. The filtration arsenal includes an 8-inch biofilter brick, protein skimmer, filter roller, media reactor with carbon, and algae scrubber. I wish I could keep some invertebrates like crabs and various shrimps, but the triggers would eat them straight away.

Could you add a puffer to that mix like the Stars and Stripes or porcupine? How bout the box fish mentioned in the video? Are the triggers “smart” like puffers? I’d love to do something like your description!

Arothron puffers are the best!!!! Such great fish. Clown triggers are amazing too. Undulated are always jerks.

Be careful, if you're going to add puffer fish to your FOWLR tank make sure it is NOT an acrylic tank. Puffers will scratch the hell out of acylic with their beaks.

Hello, Do you have to use RODI water with a Fowlr tank? What would be the drawbacks to using conditioned tap water? Thanks

I personally use RODI, because using a conditioner for a large tank, meaning a lot of conditioner, will make the protein skimmer go nuts on a lot of occasions. Especially the saltwater version of Stress Coat. It says it won't make the skimmer crazy, but it does. It's just easier using the RODI. Nothing to worry about. But you also don't need the crazy setups that BRS has. A regular 75-100 gpd (3 cylinder plus membrane) will suffice. You don't HAVE to use RODI, especially if not using a skimmer. But some conditioners will definitely cause a headache.

Wow... A LOT of these species get enormous in size. All of the fish mentioned get too big for anything under 120 gallon 6ft tank. A Formosa Wrasse can reach 2ft in length. A smaller, more colorful option would be the Red Coris Wrasse. They look identical when young, except the Formosa will have black edging on the top and bottom fins. The Undulated Trigger is one of the most aggressive fish around and should be avoided by most. Same as the Queen Trigger. VERY NASTY! Boxfish, like the Longhorn Cowfish, Dog Faced Puffers (or any Puffer mentioned here) are great fish, but also get quite large. Frog Fish (Anglers) will literally lure in, and eat any other fish that are the same size as it. More of a solitary fish or should be the smallest in the tank. Most groupers shouldn't even be considered as some can reach 6ft. Also, most of the fish you mentioned eat crabs and snails for breakfast. So while the crab is decorating himself, he'll be cracked open by any puffer, trigger, ect... even the small species of puffer. If they have teeth, they most definitely eat crabs and snails. My favorite fowlr fish is the Harlequin Tuskfish. Gorgeous fish with blue teeth. Magnificent Foxface is also a great looker. The Dwarf Lionfish is a cool looking option as well. Sorry to shoot down most of your choices, but while great looking and very personable, these fish get way too large for the average aquarist. It's unfair for the fish and irresponsible to not mention the sizes. People, please do research on any FOWLR fish BEFORE you buy one. They can eat your other fish, crabs, and outgrow a very large tank. These are not good examples unless you have a very large tank. They all start out small, but grow fast.

So much better than reef tanks, the fish have way more personality and reef dorks are obnoxious! I’ll take large angels and butterflyfish anyday!

Since when did Koran angels get re-named to Korean angelfish? They're called Koran because the patterns on their tails are said to represent texts from the Koran. Please don't tell even fish keeping is going woke!?😢
