I saw a KZread channel that talked about keeping your livestocks water from freezing by filling water bottles with salt and screw the lid on and drop them in the water and the water won't freeze over. Hope this helps!

Great information on your endeavor. We have only 4…..very weedy acres in Hawaiian rainforest…ag zoned….I am firmly convinced that sheep are going to be the main livestock our little homestead/farm will be equipped to handle..I’m hoping that the parasite resistant st croix will do well in our climate very wet conditions…like you, meat as well as land management is our 2 goals. I’m not sure if I have enough land to separate the females from the male during non mating season, or if I’ll always buy a few feeders every year.

We actually don’t separate anymore. Still getting early spring breedings😃! The baby rams are banded so we don’t have to worry about separating them either.

There are lots of differing opinions on line breeding. Many different strategies. The amount of Information on this subject is a bit overwhelming . I’m still actually consulting several veterans in the field to decide how we will approach this to be certain! Right now I’m leaning towards letting him breed his daughters one time before getting rid of him being I like his traits a lot. I’ll let you know for sure what we decide and probably make a short video about it! God bless you Tammy!

Yes! I wish I had a drone to show you how my property is divided up but long story short, I have a lot more paddock fencing to install in order to start running them with my milk cows!

Hi guys! My husband and I are really considering to start raising St. Croix Sheep. Your videos popped up when I started researching about this breed and we have enjoyed watching them and learning from you all. We would like to start out small and with the amount of land we have we will only be able to probably start out with 3 ewes and 1 ram. We were wondering if you guys were selling any at this time or later in the year? Or if you knew of anywhere else that would be a good place to buy from? Thank you!!

So what's your opinion on the St. Croix vs the Royal White sheep? I'm in west tennessee near Dyersburg, river bluffs with dark and red clay soil, tall fescue, 90°F weather with 70-90% humidity summer, rainy winters with 30-50% humidity, around 30-40°F, usually only a week in teens and twenties.

From what I understand about Royal White, they are a result of breeding Saint Croix‘s and dorpers. Looks like it would be a very similar animal to raise as Saint Croix’s. I don’t see any reason that it would not work out great in your area.

@@OurFruitfulFamily Yup 👀 That's what I've been looking at, being able to get away with processing one large animal vs 2. And maintaining the St Croix traits. Still the development of the breed was so recent first hand information isn't really as available as I'd like 🤔

Hi there! I have a question about sheep farming. We may be crazy but we're considering getting 6 (give or take) sheep for the land at our house (2.5-3 acres). Goals are land management (we have a lot of natural area we can't really cut and hope the sheep will enjoy) and also meat production. Are we crazy? Lol. We also have 2 toddlers - age 1.5 and 4 (and thinking about adding another). One of my concerns is having an outdoor area full of poop to the point I wouldn't want the kids to play out there. Does it easily degrade? Is there a strong smell? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hahaha! No, I don’t think you are crazy! I don’t find the smell to be anything at all. The poop is kinda like deer poop. Not big piles like cow poop. Does take a while to go away. Quite s few weeks. If you plan to rotationally graze them, you could let the kids play in the area they haven’t grazed for a while if you are concerned about the poop. We are all about people trying recess! Don’t be afraid to try something! If you don’t like them, sells them. Or put them in your freezer. Doesn’t hurt anything to give it a trial run to see how you like keeping them. One thing I would be cautious of is letting your children that age being out there alone if you have a ram in your flock. Just like a bull, they can be dangerous. Not always, but they can.

How do you go about breeding and the timeline from lambing to selling? How old do they have to be to sell for meat vs selling to other farmers? Do you let the ram in with the ewes the whole time?

@@OurFruitfulFamily I just saw the part where you mentioned the ram being around young kids. We are usually out there with them but now I'm wondering if we should go with just ewes. Is there an option to find a ram for stud services (or whatever it's called for livestock, we're dog breeders haha) when we're ready to breed?

I love your show. Why didn't buy Bob the ram from Greg Judy?

Thank you so much! We weren’t quite ready for a ram at that time! We wanted to do a little more research on breeding before we put a ram on the property! And by the time we figured it out, they didn’t have anymore. They sell out fast. Haha! But Bob is so beautiful and we are so blessed to have gotten him! And the owner has become quite a good friend! Messages me all the time to see how he’s doing!

@@fidelsseecoomar3279 well I certainly will have to eventually. They can really only effectively breed 50 ewes in a breeding season. Our plan is to have close to 100.

I am considering adding a few sheep to our homestead. I found a source that will have ewes and rams for sale in the next 2 months. They are all from the same bloodline. Should I just get Ewes? I’d like to breed on our farm eventually but I’m guessing you’re not supposed to breed a Ram to Ewes from the same bloodline.

There is a lot that goes in to that question. Most people agree that you don’t want to breed brother to sister. Father to daughter, father to granddaughter father to great granddaughter ect is called line breeding and is considered acceptable to a certain extent. As long as you do not start to see characteristics displayed that you find undesirable, you can continue to line breed until your ram becomes infertile. We purchased our ewes from Greg Judy and purchased a ram elsewhere and he will be the only ram on our property for years to come.

I’m just now seeing this! Sorry about that! Not including the sheep, approx 2 grand so far in fencing materials. We will be running the sheep on about 20 of our acres by the time I finish the Fencing!

She’s a mix breed that Greg Judy breeds. She is 50% Pyrenees, 25% Anatolian and 25% Maremma
