Four Mistakes Religious People Make - Romans 2:1-11 - Skip Heitzig

Jesus was not a religious leader. He was a righteous leader. And He was often confronting the religious leaders of His day. Likewise Paul found many enemies among the religious elite of his day, among both Jews and Gentiles. After announcing his theme of good news in Jesus, Paul promptly plunged into the bad news of God’s wrath-a subject that religious people sometimes love (but for all the wrong reasons). Paul tells us some of their most common mistakes.

This sermon is both convicting AND reassuring all at the same time. Amen. I know that I have been judgmental against my brothers and sisters, and also turned away from His grace towards them. Thank You, Lord for delivering me! Thank you for chasing after me so that I won’t be consumed in my own disappointment and bitterness. I know You will do it! I’m not there yet but I praise You in advance. You are delivering me from my wretchedness. Thank You, Lord! My Saviour, Comforter, and Rescuer. Amen

I admire Skips sermons a lot but I admit this one was a bit one-sided for me. Being religious shouldn't be preached to be bad thing, it's like saying every church-goer who can easily be seen as religious are bad people if not the worst people. That in itself is a judgment. The point Jesus made between the Scribe and the tax collector, was not to let our devotion to God (which is a good thing) to stomp on people and see themselves as better than everyone else. The good works in the church can be taken as religious works or not, but that's not what matters, what matters is that we are working out our faith to glorify God and not to embrace our own names and images, which is idolatry to think of the self as some great being. Anyhow, as many immediately make the word religious as a bad description because of the negative connotation we make it come with, why can't we define it differently from the world we live in? If we deny religion, then why preach to attend church when you can just pray from home? Why tithe when that'll be seen as religious? So do we stop doing anything that can be seen as religious? Or do we do all that that is religious and then preach that we aren't religious? It's like living and saying two different things because we want to be accepted by people.

Because Skippy is still wrestling with his former Catholic upbringing and uses reformed theology to kick against the CC every chance he gets when his weak theology feels threatened. In Romans 2 it's obvious we are not saved by faith alone. Our works , and how we measure others will be measured to us . He can't state the obvious so he immediately defaults to magesterial church rituals are bad compared to the spirit filled non denoms who side with him.

Chapter 1 is the preview to the main topic found in Chapter 2. Here Paul uses despicable acts and thoughts in Chapter 1 to bring about that we are no different than those described in Chapter 1. We have no rights to claim we're any better. ALL HAVE SINNED AND COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD!!! Let me remind you brother that Paul's letter was to the CHURCH in Rome. Not to the public. Self inventory is necessary for a true Christian. Honest inventory needed for true repentance. Self deception is a horrible way to live.

The tax collector is not the man in Romans 1, even if the pharisee is the religious self righteous man in Romans 2, the one who is expressed in Romans 1, are those who hate god, they have no light, the tax collector is the god Believer, you preachers preach this all the time, you say, Christians sin but they repent, this is the tax collector, do you not do the same Christ Believer, forgive me Lord I am a sinner, Romans 1 is talking of total and utter depravity, and this is an extreme state of darkness in the heart, and this extreme state of depravity of defilement, comes to the Idol worshipper, because there is no light in an Idol, so they are simply fed by The Darkness, and are consumed by it.

Religious people? The apostle Paul was a very religious man. The problem with people now a days is that they think a religious person is a bad thing. No my friends !!! Leave the ignorance of these preachers aside. Read your Bible and see for yourself. A religious person isnt a bad term. It means you follow truly your faith. Was peter a religious man? Was Judas a religious man? Paul? Timothy? And etc. If you are not a religious Christian, that means you are a fake one. Most of you here heard the term and automatically think it's a bad term. Except you should read your Bible more.

Paul lays out his religious credentials and achievements in Philippians 3 before saying they are all garbage compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. He says Christ came to save sinners, of whom he was the worst in 1 Timothy 1. The morale of this letter to the Romans is that we need the righteousness of God through Jesus' atoning sacrifice on the cross. Any religion that adds requirements to that is indeed bad religion. So maybe you have missed the point, maybe not. It's hard to interpret your comment which seems to be simply about whether religion is a good thing or bad thing.

I definitely agree on your view and I can see the point he's making as well but I just wouldn't blame the word itself and it's definition. I believe you're right that people have tarnished the term so much that when we hear it we automatically have a negative connotation to it because of the bad experiences that came from it.

@@kevinkeltner6107 everything to Paul prior to encountering Christ was very good, since he was a Hebrew of Hebrew origin, fully invested in serving Yahweh. The encounter with Christ illuminated his mind to the new covenant . The new covenant is meant for everyone, Jews and gentiles and builds on the OT practices. We still have priests, sacrifices such as the eucharist, confession of sins, ordained days of worship, NT writings, NT saints ie bishops, priests deacons, NT martyrs, and NT eschatology . The newly formed church had the great commission to carry out Christs commands to teach, heal, exorcise, baptise to administer the sacraments of the mystical body of Christ. Skip is very mistaken .

11:06 who are religious people today? A - those who practice the sacraments that christ gave us. Romans 2 clearly says that osas, eternal security, faith alone are not bublical. Romans 2 clearly states you must have works to accompany your proclamation of faith Romans 2 clearly states that youll be judged by god ,measure for measure, how you judge others . Romans 2 never says heres a separation of religious folks from the spirit filled folks. Ronans 2 us addressing the new converts to Christianity, gentiles and Jews. Both had Gods watching over them. Paul demonstrates how pagans had intergrity because they saw the natural world and recognized that there was divine being who created it. Paul introduces jesus to them , telling the romans that salvation stems from the jews, but comes from jesus , who is god and will judge everyone according to their works Mthw 24:35
