The Aral Sea used to be much bigger... like about 5 times the size it is now. Over use of irrigation, during Soviet times and now, has seen this inland sea, shrink steadily, over the last 70 years. As the water receided, the ships were left behind. No mystery and nothing new. Click bait for 10 year olds.

Zhalanash (Kazakh: Жаланаш, Jalanash), is a village in south central Kazakhstan. Previously a fishing village on the Aral Sea, Zhalanash now lies several kilometers from its shores. In recent years, it had become a tourism location for its old harbor, where several ship hulls had been left standing in the desert by the retreating sea. As of 2017, these hulls have been dismantled for scrap metal and only the bottoms remain.

@Andrew Young It's a good thing we still have the folks that live close to the Aral sea and can remember the past when they were small . Remembering the old water lines etc . The new and very different weather conditions that are now present ; very cold and windy at night and can be very hot almost desert like during summer daylight hours . I also remember comments of a very fine powdery salt dust in the air during windy times that made peoples eyes sore . Which brings me to another question . I'm still not clear on whether Aral is a fresh or a salt water lake ?

Being a child of the 80s I can remember looking at world maps, and seeing the massive Aral sea as large as the Caspian or Black seas. I often wondered about these 3 seas, then in the forbidden Soviet Union. Now the Aral sea is just a tiny speck due to the water that normally fills it being diverted elsewhere. Loss of the Aral seal is one of the great environmental tragedies of the 20th century. There is NO mystery as to why these ships are out in the desert - that desert used to be the Aral sea. Not teleportation, not magic, not aliens nor any such things, and very very bad bs on this show to suggest it could be that when there is such and obvious and prosaic explanation.

2 dams around the sea were built and the water was averted in 2 different directions so that’s what made the sea disappear

This was because the water was diverted onto fields for irrigation of crops and a great lake that was previously there dried up.

Russia drained that sea to divert water to other areas of the region. Russia does not have an EPA and what the do sometimes is quite unbelievable. The entire region was devastated and many communities were destroyed as a result. I don't remember the name of the place but this is most likely what they are showing you and the effects being ships seemingly sitting in the middle of no where.

Do a study on the make up of the steel ? That could allow you to figure out where the vessels were constructed. There is a video on why this sea disappeared.

There was a 'sea', not anymore. A land locked sea, they decided to 'sacrifice' a body of water, and eventully years of drought, and eventually a lack of precipitation.

1st is this the best image our satellites can get? 2nd there does not appear to be any work going on or any bunkers for staff. The sea disappearing doesn't fit. It would be handy to know roughly how old they are, what type of ships they are. Good vid though.
