Four Margaritas with Different Orange Liqueurs

Which orange liqueur works best in a margarita? We are testing a basic margarita recipe with four different orange liqueurs. Cointreau, Patron Citronge, Grand Marnier, and Gran Gala to see which one we like the best.
We'll be using Espolon Tequila in all four as well to keep it similar.

Cointreau would be my personal favorite. Ive made them like this for years. Alot of restaurants will do the Gran Mariner but i dont think cognac mixes well with tequila

Cointreau is our go-to, but Paula's Orange Liqueur has also become a favorite.

I love my margaritas with Reposado Tequila and Grand Marnier. I call it the Old Man Margarita. The barrel flavor makes it mellow

Another orange option would be Mandarine Napoleon Liqueur. It’s difficult to find in some locations, but carries a distinctive orange flavor that enhances many cocktails and is excellent by itself when sipped on crushed ice. 🍊

Excellent comparison. I've tried all 4 and would agree that the Cointreau and Grand Marnier are the best choices. I'm currently trying Paula's Orange Liquor and A. De Fussigny Orange Liquor with margaritas and Old Fashioned cocktails. Have also been using candied orange rind syrup instead of the agave syrup which is a unusual changeup that goes well with Margaritas or an Old Fashioned.

I personally like Hiram Walker Orange Curacao. Its cheap and low alcohol content but it has a good flavor, is sweet and not overpowering. Its so underrated!

We will have to look for Hiram Walker Orange Curacao. Since we recorded this video, we did another blind test woth different orange liqueurs and found Paula's Orange Liqueur to be a good option at a good price. Thank you for commenting.

I usually make margaritas with Cointreau. Gran Marnier tastes good but not so much like a margarita. I just got some Clémont Creole Shrubb which was great in my mai tai but somehow tasted a bit bitter in the margarita. How to drink did a 25 drink matrix of tequilas and orange liqueurs which was interesting. It wasn't that one was always better but that some worked better with certain tequilas.

@@thegreatmargaritahunt : I think which orange liqueur works best really depends on the tequila and I've only had four variations at home. Cointreau seems to work well with most because it's just a good orange flavor. I usually think Grand Marnier works well but doesn't taste as much like a Margarita... however, with my tequila of choice, Arette, I think Grand Marnier blends best. I've stopped ordering Margaritas in restaurants because they're usually terrible. Usually way too sweet and chemical tasting from cheap ingredients and premixes.

@@thegreatmargaritahunt : I would also mention that while many like Espalon and I don't think it's bad, I think it tastes too much like vodka.

@@lrvogt1257, For anyone who likes Espolon, give Olmeca Altos a try. Olmeca's the same price as Espolon but considerably better.

    Why not triple sec?

Hey there! Thanks for your question! 😊So, the reason I’m not a fan of Triple Sec is because most of the ones I’ve tried just taste a bit too artificial for my liking. It’s like they’re trying too hard to be an orange, you know? 🍊Instead, I’m all about Cointreau, Grand Marnier, and Paula's Orange Liqueur. These liqueurs bring a smoother, more authentic orange flavor to the party. Plus, they provide a deeper flavor profile without overpowering my margaritas ! 🍹Thanks for watching, and happy margarita making! Salud! 🥂

    1. Cointreau is a triple sec. 2. Why did you mot use original recipe of 2 tequila, 1 orange liqueur, 1 lime juice? Your version will be too sweet.

A sour based drink is always a 2-1-1 part drink. So since she used agave syrup as an additional ingredient, she was correct. Please go be nasty somewhere else.
