With a room full of witnesses, they have a description of the culprit but little else. My father lived in New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He said when some NYPD patrolmen got ambushed and assassinated, he was told that most of the other criminals stayed off the streets for a while because the bulk of the NYPD was out for blood.

In these cases it's always like only cops are allowed a burning rage and a desire for revenge. Anybody else's loved ones are told not to take the law into their on hands and let the cops handle it. But for the system, investigating and prosecuting a killer is just part of the daily grind and a paycheck.

Imagine you work in a job where you see the worst of humanity. Where you, on day to day basis, see what people are willing to do to each other when they're angry enough, crazy enough or depraved enough. Every day you see strangers who have had every horrible thing done to them and you are expected to do your job and to dig through that horror and keep a cool head to find who did this to them. Where that impartiality, that 'indifference' helps you do your job better and to cope with that daily horror. Now imagine, coming to work one morning, and instead of random strangers sprawled out on the floor, it's 4 friends you know. People you've worked with, laughed with. Who's families you've ate and drunk with, and who's kids you can picture trying to come to terms with their death and grief, just as you're trying to do the same yourself whilst their blood is still there on the floor. I don't expect anyone would be indifferent then.

Sure it's entertaining to see them emotional, fighting for justice and almost crossing the line. This happened in a Washington State city some years ago. 4 local police officers ambushed and slaughtered in a Forza Coffee Shop early one Sunday morning. The officers liked to stop in at the coffee shop to sip coffee and discuss their day's assignments before beginning their shifts.Their murderer had recently been released from prison, thanks to Mike Huckabee's intervention to enable his early release. He decided to go 'hunting' for cops. 3 of his victims were husbands and fathers, and one was a wife and mother. He was wounded, but managed to escape and elude police until days later, when he attempted to ambush another police officer. This time the officer saw the ambush coming, and managed to kill him.

I remember the cop shooting that this episode was based on. It happened at a coffee shop in Seattle. In reality, Maurice Clemmons killed the cops because he was a cop hater. Of course, for the episode to tell a story, they gave a more personal reason. Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was blamed because he gave clemency to the shooter which allowed him to go to Seattle to do this.
