@@user-wc8ws3xr1z Pretty confident to tell ya, South Korea will surpass Japan in a couple of decades, unless Japan finds a new and a greater leader(seriously, Abe?) and new innovative businesses rise... Many of the Korean companies are slowly taking up the markets, and even B2B relationships. For example, Tesla switched from Panasonic's car batteries to LG chem car batteries, since the technology was better and new. And China, well China is a monster... cause of the sheer population which leads to more new innovations and their biggest manufacturing industry... I can say that some of that are more of quantity rather than quality. It would be almost impossible for SK to outscale China anytime soon but I think that living standards are better there, and China has very corrupt politics there... XiJing Ping is being a dictator there, which is really bad.

Huai Wei Edmund Teo China might be big with massive population but its an undeveloped country with low hdi rating. Korea is a developed country with high hdi rating. Korea should be compared to countries like Italy or France and China should be compared to India, low income, high population country.

Seeing all the comments, I have witnessed that most of the Korean comments are just getting over with the "Asian Tiger issue" or aren't that bothered to begin with, but several English comments with Mandarin nicknames are downgrading Korea. I see some people are just jealous

@@PumpkinEater-dm1xx you know what, we Koreans have compared ourselves with Americans (not that we are comparable to them econonically or politically etc., but rather considered them as gold standard or goal), so you don't need to be offended by the fact that Koreans consider themselves competing with Japan not Taiwan. It's just who we are (or who we have been to get here today) always looking up and setting higher goal.

I would say South Korea has the brightest future, Taiwan for long-term living, Hong Kong to pursue your career and Singapore for education. Edit: These highly developed Asian nations are doing fantastic. We should not compare them with one another. No nations is perfect, they have their pros and cons. What’s more important is that these 4 Asian nations really worked hard to provide a good living standard, education, healthcare, infrastructure and decent-high income for their citizens.

Right now it's not so good. Korea's birth rate dropped lower than Japan's to the lowest in the world. Although it happened only recently and Korea doesn't have an aging population, if it continues, there could be an economic stagnation like what is happening in Japan.

World is way too populated as it is and it's not sustainable to continue to increase. And SK could potentially unite with NK which will provide further growth engine.

South Korea definitely has the lead here. Just the fully-functional democracy alone gives them a huge edge over the rest. Political participation is high among its citizens and it's a sovereign, independent state whereas Taiwan and Hong Kong are still part of China (or recognized as such, whether they want or not). Singapore has the highest GDP per capita among the four but that doesn't translate to actual income for average citizens as the majority of wealth is owned by foreign investors. Also, South Korea has the strongest ties with the US and EU of the four compared here. Not only that, but Korea also has the largest defensive capabilities looking at their military spending alone and it must be taken into consideration that they have conscription over there and they barely pay their men serving the 2-year conscription so that means the vast majority of their military spending is actually going into techs, weapon systems, and R&D. Also, can't ignore their population. A big population can provide self-sustenance and South Korea has an edge there as well. If things go well with their neighbors in the north in the future, they can double their land and increase the population. The unification may slow Korea's growth at first but it will become a huge driving force for their economy and leadership in the global society.

Indeed. But overall, each of those four nations (If you can even count HK as one..) have done a pretty admirable job. We have to remember that most of these places were poor backwater nations not so long ago, now they have the economies to compete with even some of the best Western economies.

For the people wondering why South Korea is part of these four amazing nations (If you can even consider HK as one...) it is because not so long ago, all of these four countries were poor underdeveloped nations, and they all share in common the fact that they managed to escape poverty at around the same time while also becoming very competitive economies, that's why South Korea is in here.

Ultimately it's SKorea vs Taiwan since HK and SG are basically city-states. Korea is also a leader in a number of rising industries: -STARTUPS (SK > SG > HK > TW): Korea has 11 unicorn startup companies and is ranked as 5th in the world. Taiwan has 0, HK has 3, and SG has 4 in total. -NUCLEAR FUSION (SK > TW/HK/SG): Korea is also leading the world in the nuclear fusion industry with the most records for high-performance plasma operations while TW hasn't even started developing nuclear fusion reactors. -FUTURE CARS the future of ICT (SK > TW > SG/HK): Korea is a leading seller in hydrogen fuel cell cars, EVs, and car battery technology. TW has its own brand called Luxgen, but it's barely surviving in the contemporary car market. However, TW will profit a lot from AI and 5G chips that go into future cars because chip-making companies will ask TSMC to make them. The disadvantage of TSMC is that they are basically a factory so they are incapable of generating demand. Samsung, on the other hand, will design and generate demand for their AI and 5G chips. Conclusion: TW is no match for SK in manufacturing but they are tied for chips that will go into these future cars. -RENEWABLE ENERGY (SK > TW > SG > HK): A Korean company called Hanhwa Q Cells is the #1 selling company for photovoltaic solar cells in a number of major countries like USA, Germany, UK, and even Japan. TW has Innogy which is a rising company for wind power, but less valuable than Q Cell. -PLATFORM TECHNOLOGY (SK > SG > HK > TW): Korean companies have leading platform companies like Naver and Kakao Webtoons and K-POP. Naver and Kakao, for example, own more than 80% of the world's internet cartoon market and is becoming a major entertainment platform like Disney or Netflix. Naver Line and Webtoons dominate Taiwan's market. TW doesn't have its own telecommunication platform. -CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION (SK > HK = TW > SG): This one is really no match. The biggest thing that came out of Taiwan in terms of culture was bubble tea and maybe Beef Noodle soup. Korea hit home runs in KPOP, K-Drama, it founded the Webtoon culture, popular movies, K-BBQ, popular instant foods, and the list goes on. Recently Korean drama's like 'Kingdom' and 'Itaewon Class' have become one of the world's most popular TV shows. I haven't even heard of Taiwanese dramas. Out of these 4 countries, I would say Hong Kong is ahead of Taiwan and Singapore in terms of cultural globalization. -DISPLAY TECH (SK > TW > HK/SG): Korea has moved on to OLED and flexible screens while the display industry in Taiwan still relies on LCD manufacturing. - CLOSED CIRCUIT TECH (SK > TW > SG > HK): Taiwan's TSMC dominates the foundry market, but Samsung and SK Hynix dominate the NAND-Flash, DRAM, 5G Chip, and AI and System-on-Chip (SOC) markets. Korea has also begun to enter the semiconductor design (fabless) market with rising players like Chips&Media. The market was dominated by American and British companies (such as ARM) and Asian companies couldn't gain a foothold in this field until recently. So yeah, it's safe to say Korea is another level by now.

S. Korea is overwhelmingly dependent on China. Taiwan is too, but not close to that extent. Whole separating eggs into different baskets. Also, and perhaps more importantly, Taiwan has a far less income wealth gap whereby women rank virtually identical to men. S. Korea women are still expected to sacrifice for men. That said, as is, without a doubt, S. Korea is in a different league than Taiwan.

@Justin Xie Guangdong's population is 110 million which is more than twice that of Korea's population (51 million). So I'm surprised that they are only now surpassing Korea's nominal GDP, or is it that Korea's GDP is very high for its population. Unsurprisingly, Guangdong's GDP per capita is only 5500$ vs Korea's GDP per capita of 31,000$

In Brunei, it's the fifth time in the world. What do you think about going in? Brunei's per capita GDP is similar to that of Taiwan. A blind spot on the PPP. The U.K. and France also have PPP per capita, which is almost similar to Korea's. I have it. However, per capita GDP is higher in France and the United Kingdom. Taiwan is a country where per capita PPP and GDP are more than twice as different.

That is the PPP index works for you to explain the question here .The concept of rich is not just the wage number also should include the factor "price of goods" combine together then consider how rich or poor you are .

I have ever been to South Korea 🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷 in 2019, Taiwan 🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼 in 2018 and Singapore 🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬 in 2016. I wish I would be able to visit Hong Kong 🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰and Japan 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 as well in the future. Love all five Asian countries from Vietnam. ❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks for uploading such a nice clip on some of the developed countries in Asia. Though I don't understand why Korea is still regarded as one of the four tigers as it used to be in 1990's. HK and Singapore are city states with a population of less than 10 million I suppose, and Taiwan's GDP is less than a third of Korea. Korea's GDP is in somewhere between that of Italy and Spain, which well explains why Korea is one of the nations forming 'G20'. So I would say there certainly is a huge difference within the four tigers.

South Korea & Singapore have the brightest futures. However, I believe all four are shining lights within the global economic structure. I would add Malaysia as a very admirable candidate, with super amiable people & business ideals.

I'm lucky I have been to all of these countries. I have a soft spot for Hong Kong because I was born in the UK. The sad part about Hong Kong its on the slide , not the place it was in 1997. I have been also to Singapore many times and it great . South Korea I have only been once and I was very surprised about its very high standards. I will return in the future . Taiwan I was shocked at its very high mountains , I found it just great . Asia in my eyes is very interesting, hard to beat .

The term Asian tigers has been out of use since the 90s. All 4 are now well developed mature economies and part of the rich club. The tiger mantle has now been passed on to Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
