Thank you Hemingway. I get excited when I see a fountain pen being used in a movie or on television. The British shows feature them a lot. Doc Martin, Father Brown and the like. Being retired, I am always looking for bargains, especially paper and journals that are fountain pen friendly. To my surprise the other day, the local CVS drug store here in St. Fl have the caliber journals marked down 70%. I now have enough to last awhile.

No, they didn't. The queen is given a variety of pens throughout, including, accurately at one point, the burgundy 51 Custom she was renowned for using; I'm fairly sure she didn't have the others. Prince William is supposedly gifted a Waterman Expert by Princess Diana ahead of his exams, which also seems improbable. Jeremy Irons repeatedly uses a fountain pen in the second "Lolita" film. It looks authentic but I'm not sure it's possible to tell the make and model. An interesting choice of films, Hemingway.@@HemingwayJones

Guten Tag Herr Jones! 😆 Sorry but I couldn’t resist the Indiana Jones reference! I really enjoyed this video and I’ve seen two out of the three movies that you referenced. I am also not a fan of Quentin Tarantino, although Christoph Waltz is such a good actor that he steals just about every movie that he is in. I am so glad that you referenced the movie A Good Year as that is one of my all-time favorites. I especially love the scene where Freddie Highmore is helping Albert Finney write out checks to pay his bills. When Freddie comments that the mechanic has sent a bill Albert Finney replies No not one sou! The Peugeot is wheezing worse than your Aunt Midge! Cracks me up every time! And of course Freddie Highmore is using that same fountain pen with that fabulous green ink. It’s just a wonderful scene in a movie that has so much heart. One of my all-time favorite movies, well actually, a Masterpiece Theater miniseries version, is Jane Eyre…the version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. There is a pivotal scene where Jane writes a letter to her uncle in Madeira, telling him that she has to be married. She writes that letter using a dip pen and very black ink. That letter, of course, sets off a major part of the plot. One could also say that in virtually every movie of that time period you’re going to see a fountain pen of one type or another. I apologize for the long response, but I just enjoyed this video so much. Thank you for bringing back to my current memory a movie that I love so much. I might have to go pull out the DVD now and watch it!

Very cool idea to make a video about fountain pens in movies. I already loved your video about writer's pens. "Inglorious Bastards" is probably the movie by Tarantino I like the least. But when I now think about the other Tarantino movies, I am not sure if I still like any of them. however, this is not about the movies but about he appearance of pens in the movies. And as long as we talk fountain pens, I agree that the scene in Indiana Jones is one of the best (and of course it fits perfectly to you HJ). Another great scenes with pens (although not fountain pens but quill pens) is in Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" when the ink stains on the finger of the monk lead to the solution of the murder mystery. Thanks for another great video. Looking forward to other great ideas you have.

Love this discussion! Two of my favorite films have fountain pen scenes (although featured briefly) - The English Patient and The Accidental Tourist. Almost certainly not fountain pens, but there's a scene in 2010: Odyssey Two where Roy Scheider's character uses two pens to explain how to get from Jupiter back to Earth quickly.. Because the actor had to suspend the pens in a magnetic field to simulate zero G, it took 127 takes to do it right. On the 90-somethingth take, it worked, and Scheider said "Holy S!!t! It worked!" "Cut! Set it up again..." LOL

Hi… did not know where to post this general comment so posting it here. My husband and I only recently turned on to your channel two months ago and we are catching up on all of your shows. We want to thank you for giving us such enjoyable content. Personally, I find your shows so packed with personality in addition to technical feedback and the content in my opinion is unique! Thank you so much! We regularly enjoy and look forward to viewing them. We watch (catching up on older videos) several times a week. Our grail list has increased tremendously! 😮 for me, I’ve added the MB egyptomania, the MB Boheme (which I’m getting today), the Aurora Sole Milo, the Waterman Red Ripple (that you featured in the film pens video), the Cartier de Diablo and the Conway Stewart Churchill Charles III…. Once again, thank you for proving such enjoyable content! Happy pen collecting and writing!

I share your appreciation for Peter Mayle, though trading his books always makes me hungry. I’m not a movie buff andI’m not terribly observant, so the only addition i can offer to your list is the scene in _101Dalmatians_ in which Cruella is trying to get Roger and Anita to sell the puppies and she spatters ink all overvas she shakes her fountain pen to start it writing. I don’t think I’ve seen any QT films. It makes sense to me that one might pump a pen only once so that the pen has less ink to possibly leak later when bumping along in military vehicles. Video was fun and I love all the suggestions others have made. Have you done videos of books in which fountain pens feature? Thank you.

I love FP watching in films. Thanks for reminding me of some of the best instances. I would like to include David Mamet's "House of Games." It's just a brief scene, but the psychiatrist character (played by Mamet's then-wife) finishes her therapy session note-taking and clips her black Waterman Le Man 100 into the notebook. I have one of those pens from the '90s, a revival of the original Patricians of the '40s.

What a fun video!h I have some more pen movie references for you. I commented for a recent video of yours that Nicole Kidman taught herself to write right-handed for a hand close-up in "The Hours". We see Nicole Kidman's/ Virginia Woolf's hand writing with a fountain pen. Early in the 1975 movie "Hindenburg" starring George C. Scott we see a woman's hand as she is using a fountain pen to write a warning letter to the German embassy. Later in "Hindenburg" a fountain pen is stood on end on a tabletop for a bet as to how long the pen can stand there without falling over. Yet another fountain pen is shown in the movie: the pen is being used to smuggle diamonds that are hidden inside the pen. Also in "Valley of the Dolls" there's a scene in which Susan Hayward as Helen Lawson is going to sign a contract, I believe, and asks, "Anyone got a fountain pen?"

I agree with you about Tarantino and his films. I dislike some actors because they dominate the characters they play; I can only see the actor. Tarantino has the same effect as a director; you can't forget that you're watching a Tarantino film. He occupies way too much space in his films. I like the first two pens featured. I recently bought a vintage Conway Stewart in celluloid and have taken a real liking to it. That black one looks like a worthy addition to my modest collection. You didn't identify the pen in the Tarantino film, and I can't. But there it's more the way he uses it that commands attention than the pen itself. Fountain pen lovers often look for fountain pens in films, but usually the pens are there only as props because the period demands them. You've chosen three films in which the pens are more significant. They play a function beyond just telling us the film is set in analog days. Good choices, I think. I can't think off hand of any others, but I will keep my eyes open. I haven't had time to see the second Dune film yet, but I'm confident I won't see the emperor or Baron Harkonnen signing any documents with fountain pens, or any other kind of pens. A pity. I'd like to think the hobby will hang around for the next 20 millennia, but nothing lasts forever.
