Well at least they don't roll and when you use the cherry & cola, the red covering even comes included. ;) I think with a bit of work a design could probably be made that could securely store plenty of water. A more rubbery insert perhaps. The plastic would still be a bit less clear and prone to scratches vs glass, but it's not a permanent or very large colony solution anyway. I actually used to use the orange ones to capture queens. Back when the plastic was orange (not sure if those still exist, haven't bought tic tacs in ages xD). It gave them a nice shaded area to calm down in and an included lid that could easily be closed.

True the red container is a good option. If you look at the thingiverse link, some made better versions. I loved the project, but won't continue it. I'm not capturing Dutch queens. I have enough.

It's a fun project. It will never replace the testtube. But it's works just fine!

@TheCraftingAnt before testubes we had jars of dirt. At the time everyone though jars were fine and the best, then someone figured out testubes. 100% in the future testubes will be replaced by something better it's just we havnt found it yet, every little test brings is nearer though to something better than a testtube. :)

Boring, yet cheap and effective. Cleaning this box of menthol smell requires quite some washing, and in the end you're left with an inferior product. You need to water it every two days, whereas a test tube requires any water maintenance only once every several months/over a year, depending on tube size and ant water consumption. And if you don't own a 3D printer then you're stuck with even worse option! Stay with test tubes. They do more for less work.

I agree, but its a fun project. It will never win from a testtube.

@@TheCraftingAnt Using tic tac boxes (with an outworld made of q-tip box) was the go to recommended starting setup in Polish forums over a decade ago, but once people realised how convenient and cheap tubes are tic tac boxes became obsolete... and with my own experience tubes are truly superior. Showing alternatives which require manual watering every two days may do more harm than good since inexperienced people might copy this and fail to provide proper amount of water, something that simply cannot happen in a tube. And inexperienced people just lack the experience (duh) to judge the shortcomings of this "fun little alternative to BORING tubes".
