Thanks for doing this monster of a “How to Play”. I don’t think my friend and I would have been able to play it correctly without this. The rulebook isn’t a mess but it’s got some glaring faults. Paul for 2020.

12:57 If I'm not mistaken, the third column interests not only a 2-3-player game, but also a 4-player game when you want to import an another player resource that is not on the section of the city you need. But you can do this only after a 2nd wooden house (completion token) is placed on a Prestige Building. :)

That's a huge rule. The first time we played, one player refused to ever place one of his initial resources. We didn't remember that rule, so we played through the rest of the game hampered in that way. Took much longer than the game should've and we ended up not really liking it then.

One of your longer videos!! Nice that you also explain some of the strategies and reasons for certain actions. My copy cant come soon enough.

This was an exquisitely constructed how-to-play! I absolutely love how to shifted from the simple to complex rules - and from the common to the exotic - so seamlessly; not letting yourself be bound to the sequence of play if it would confuse your audience. Brilliant!

Honestly, I wish the "trickle down" scoring had been described as "you get points, plus anything you depend on gets its points". This is far more intuitive than the "you earn 4, and then pay out 2". You can sort of follow this by just using the "+2" indicator instead. The only time it gets a bit confusing is with neutral resources, since they use up 1 extra point.

Thank you for another great rules video! I am waiting for my copy to arrive, and hopefully it will be here before the weekend, as we have two game nights planned. Now, I don't have to read the rules, and that is awesome! Great overview, and it really made me look forward to play the game! Keep it up :D

The miniature Minas Tirith is because it is a city-building game, the hexes are from Forge War, and of course the secret box of hidden stuff. I'm trying to put a few little "easter eggs" in my videos where I can.

You can NEVER use the black space, no matter what. Knowing Gloomhaven just lets you know a little bit about what it is. Spoiler: We went there once.

Hi, great instruction :) but I have a question when I buy access to a good on one tile in one distribution, do I always have access to this resource, no matter where the next one is set, or do I have to buy access to another tile of the same good?

Hi Jeff, yes. The yellow player is indeed a big cheaty McCheaty here. Pretend there are some roads going off to the right connecting to his evil lair.

Some questions, 1. What if tier 3 advance building connect to more than 1 tier 2 building from different owner, does the rule apply is same as the prestige building being delivered a resource from different owner, so the one who make the connections decide which building get points? 2. How do you know the cost of get access from a resource (2/3/4 gold) without pulling up the token from the board to see what terrain underneath them? Because most of the time when we play this game, its quite annoying to do that so often, sometimes accidently mess the lay out, move the tile around, etc because we need to calculate the cost so often, any idea to solve this problem?

Very well made video for what looks like a very complex game. One rule i can't work out, what do you have to pay if you wish to get access to another players teir 2 resource?

It is the same rules - you pay the cost based on the terrain type where the resource building is. And if a building is over more than one type of terrain, you pay the lower cost.

So, with the prestige building at the end that connects to a neutral player; why would two be lost to the neutral player? 4 points gained with one being lost to the neutral from the pay out would leave three to blue, wouldn't it?

Isn’t the tier 3 cloth upgrade that yellow put down an illegal move? The rules state, “When placing the tile, it must be connected to prerequisite resource building tiles that player owns or has access to, connected to something the player owns, and cannot be adjacent to any other tile the player owns, excluding bridges/gates.” It’s not connected to anything yellow owns which is one of the 4 requirements that you went over and laid out in that rule. Thanks for the thorough video!

Learning games is hard, and we all make mistakes and miss something. As for how to remember rules for so many different games, that is one of those things that some people are good at and others not so much. I'm lucky in that I am generally pretty good at it, but that is ok, because I am so terrible at so many other things :) I'm not sure I have any actual tips on remembering things, but generally I think that reading a rulebook again AFTER playing the game is essential - to find anything you may have read, but then forgotten when you played. Same with my videos. Watch the video, then play the game, then rewatch, or read the rulebook. Get the information in all 3 different was of learning (reading, watching, doing), and then you stand the best chance of getting the rules right :)

Trying to understand Trickle Down Point Scoring from minute 33:49. If I get this correctly, we start with 7 points. Lets assume Green placed it and triggered. Green doesn't get all the 7 points because he has to call upon other owners of resource production first before scoring. So Weapons, it has to pay out 4 to cloth and 1 to metal. Of the 4 to cloth, Orange has to pay out as well so Green gets 1 of those 4 points paid to cloth. So 4-1 is 3. Orange gets 3 since he didn't contribute to anything else. Green gets 1 for metal, 1 for 1 for wood, and 2 for the leftover that started at metal? Phew. I think I got it.

Yep. There are a few ways of doing this to help you when learning. What I did was to provide some "VP counters". I would give 7 of them to green. But then, I would make him pay the other players for the resources he needs, who would then have to play some of those points to other players (possibly even back to green). When all this was done, everyone would trade in those VP counters for actual VP around the outside of the board, and then the game would move on. This was really helpful to learn how it works, but after you've done it a few times, the counters were no longer needed as people got the hang of it.

This is a really difficult game to understand from the rulebook alone (which I think is nearly unclear), but this video does seem to help while having multiple go's at the game and returning here for further clarification. Not an easy game to learn at all

Once recruited, the adviser is just like another card in your hand, so yeah, you get it back when you call to vote.

Example shown during 24:44 is illegal right? because the yellow player doesnt have any build he owns connected to the building he wants to put. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

New since the game was first being shown yes, but this started out last year. I remember suggesting that there be suggested starting locations for new players to help get them started, and then it became the actual full rules. Weird stuff can happen otherwise I guess.

saying it once in the beginning, maybe as a general advice is sufficient, nervous people mostly do not tend to listen through the whole clip patiently, but eager (most of all experienced) listeners get annoyed by having the narration interrupted constantly - but overall an excellent explaination
