@Honky Monkey Not ! Of all the human senses, touching is the best of them all in communication. So, learn that. If the animal were stressed, it would refuse or fight it already. As for this deer, its hind leg looks like it is losing circulation or something. This deer could use some water while being touched.

He didn't know anything even close to that, the deer was frightened and may not have even been immediately aware that he was free of the fence. Likely, he thought the rescuers were somehow connected with his rough encounter and was standing his ground as best he could. The nose petting probably meant nothing to the deer at the time, although if tamed down over a couple days, it may have drawn a connection to food or other favorable human experiance. People think the dumbest things about animals, even though animals are much more sentient than we might believe.

It's amazing what happens with age isn't it. 20 years ago I was a deer killing machine. At 43 my hunting is basically deer watching. They have to have the adrenaline factor. If a buck isn't 4 or 5 I don't even pick the gun up. I've let more deer walk in the last few years. Old and soft hearted now. Lol

Deer was thinking, “Ok, now where’s the highway and the car full of people I need to run into?”
