Fossil Hunting - 2016 12 17

Ғылым және технология

Early in the morning I began my hunt for the fossils in an old abandoned quarry.
After heavy rain it is always easier to locate fossils because it clears dust and the water erosion can expose new things.
I quickly located something with very familiar shapes ...

I'm renting a place and previous residents used the back for shooting, burning stuff. When the ground is bare from the horses make it that way, I always find glass or metal after a good rain.

In my holidays a few years ago in Italy I bought two fossils! They weren't that expensive (well, like 30€ I guess for both) but I'm lucky to have them. A trilobite and a ammonite. Wish I bought that Megalodon tooth or the other ones, but well..

I know what you mean. Sometimes I wish to have a trilobite, I was very inclined to buy one. But I make a decision, I want to have one that I found, that would be more precious to me ... until now I still didn't find none, but I still didn't give up.

Is it good for to use a acids to clean fossils?

  • @zejurassico

Omia Chevli Well, in reality I dont recomment use acids to clean fossils despite the fact that I have done some videos were I use coca cola or vinegar to clean fossils. I only do it for fun with some not very important fossils that I have. The reason that I dont recomend doing this procedure, it' s because you could end up damaging some important fóssils. If the fossil is important, sometimes even the matrix contains some microscopic fossils and indicators that are relevant for cientific study, or even the composition of the matrix could indicate the time period that the fossil belongs. So, if you decide to use acid to clean a fossil you should take this in consideration.

Ola! Quase siempre apenas com água e uma escova suave. Si los fossiles tiene rocha mui dura, lo uso um dremmel com mui cuidado vou removendo pouco a pouco la rocha. Gracias!

I guess it was marble and some limestone. But I'm only guessing because there are some quarrys in the area that do that. Thanks for the comment.

Michele Rota Hello, despite the fact that I speak in english, all of these fotage are in Portugal. I'm from Portugal. Here, there is some legislation regarding picking fossils. It's forbiden picking fossils in protected áreas. In the áreas that are not protected you can pick up fóssils. The etical part is not well defined in law...but if found something important relevant to the science you should inform the autorities.

Zé Jurássico You could come to Bulgaria tho. I wouldnt mind going there with data i gathered over the last few months. (It seems deposits have around 15 ammonite species, aswell as species from 180m-25.000 yo fossils) Its very cheap , apparently things are 70% cheaper than your country (All inclusive per day is around 38€-50€ top -tho you will proly need to supply the transport in the country(no idea how it works with rentals)
